z car paint code gallery update

Recommended Posts

I'm about ready to update the Datsun Z Paint Code Gallery on zhome.com http://zhome.com/History/ZColorGallary/index.html

I still need 216 White, 304 Gold Metallic (may have one coming - waiting for email), 306 Silver Metallic, 362 Dark Purple Metallic, and 517 Beige - all 260Z/280Z colors. Better pics of ones already in the gallery are welcome too. Photos of Z's with original paint preferred but good resprays will work too.

If you have one please attach it in this thread and I will add it with the other updates.

THanks.

Michael

Great, I'm a big fan of the paint code gallery. If you get more than 2 examples will you post pics of them? Every pic looks different due to the lighting, etc. and I'd like to see more example.

I might if I had the all the info but I don't, nor do I have the literature in which to look it up. I discussed this a little with Alan a year or 2 ago and came to the conclusion that it's quite complicated and the info may not all be there. Plus to make it legit I'd need to find JDM examples of vehicles painted with those codes and to make it similar to the current page a set of japanese paint chips. I don't speak, type or read japanese so making those requests would be next to impossible. Plus I've had to make a lot of requests for pics and done a fair amount of searchign just to populate this gallery - and it's still not finished after several years of fiddling with it.

Then what about the other markets?? I have a set of Datsun paint chips for Aus imports '71 and '72 but it doesn't specify model application.

So to summarize, if I had all the info and pics it'd be a piece of cake and I'd probably go for it.

One last thing, I think there's some chance that the codes I'm still missing (at this point 216, 304, 306, 362) were 2+2 options only. I don't know this for a fact but if true it could explain why I've had so much trouble finding them as there were less 2+2s built (or simply less desirable so owner's don't display them as much on the web). I know many car companies have certain sets of colors available for different body styles and nissan may have done this with the 280Zs.

Thanks for the update! I'm a big fan of the paint codes page and you did a great job putting it together in the first place!

I agree. To put up colors without a total certainty probably isn't a good idea. Its hard to say what a color is after 30 years, a respray, a 'slight' variation by brand etc. also.

Any info or original colors I run across I will surely forward to you. I hope everyone else does the same.

Did 362 Dark Purple Metallic ever come on stateside cars? I never knew about it. My 78Z is supposed to be 611 Wine Red Metallic which is really a beautiful color, the swatch for it on the page does not do it justice. There is a lady here in San Diego that has one painted that color, she shows at the West Coast Nationals, it gives me motivation to get mine back to proper color and conditions...then the need of $$$ brings me back to reality. Michael great job on the the Zhome paint page.

Michael! Funny! I see you posted this on 1/3 - I was using your paint chip page a day before, on 1/2 to confirm that my 510's Gold 920 was the same as the Z car. Just to show you that your contribution is, and has been, appreciated.

Anyone have a paint chip for 1977 Wine Red Metallic theyd like to part with

so I can reference it for a spring repaint?

Is code 611 the right number or is it 51013 Sparkling Burgundy Poly?

All automobile manufactures release their color codes, along with the information related to the primary colors mixed to achieve it. In this case Nissan's Color Code is 611.

PPG - takes the information provided by Nissan, and mixes that color with their paints - they might use the exact same mixture as Nissan, or they may have to alter the formula slightly when using their color products, in order for the final color to come out the same. In this case the 51013 is PPG's code for their color mix. In an ideal world, the paint from Nissan's OEM, and that from PPG should produce the same end result...

Other manufacturers would have their own color codes, that represent their mix of colors needed to match that of Nissan's 611.

After reading the recent postings on this older thread, then seeing my old post and the attached pic back in January, I didn't realize how bad the lighting was with the low winter sun. Here's a better picture with much better lighting taken last May. This one seems to do more justice for the beautiful 918 Orange color (man, I wish I still had this car ).

Michael, I have question about 2 colors.

113 - Green Metalic from the 240Z

302 Green Leaf Metalic form the 260 and 280Z

Are they the same color? If any one knows I would appreciate the info.

Also my car was repainted in 1983 so the color should be very close to the original 302 green. If you need any new images of that color go to my cars website.

As you can see from the picture below... the 302 Green on the 260Z had far more of a silver hue or under tone, than the 113 Green on the 240Z.

Here's 306 silver: First in the shadows then in then in the daylight.......

You should email those pics to mperdue. He's seeking pictures of that color for the paint code gallery.

EDIT: I guess I should have gone back and re-read the last line in his post.

I'm almost ready to do another update assuming I can still contact Carl with the email address listed on zhome. Thanks for the contributions posted here. Jmark the pic is beautiful but I would need a larger one to include it in the gallery (sans watermark).
