I've been doing a bunch of suspension work to my 77 this off-season and part of that work has been on my steering rack. I suspect this is old hat for lots of people, but it's my first time this deep into the rack and I've been trying to take pics of the interesting spots along the way. This whole project started with the rack mounting bushings. My previous owner installed polyurethane bushings on the rack mounts and they didn't look like right. The project snowballed from there, but let's start with the bushings. On the pass side, the bushing looked too narrow for the mounting slot on the rack and after some digging on the forums, it appears that the width of the P/S r…

I recently completed swapping a four speed manual transmission into my originally automatic-equipped 240Z. I got much of the info to plan this conversion from this site, but found that there was no one thread or article that contained all the information that I needed. So to give back some to the group that has helped me, I decided to try to document the whole process in one place. Disclaimer: While the basic process, theory and parts requirements should be valid for any S30, the exact details of my swap will apply only to my exact situation - installing an early four speed (Type A - F4W71A) into a left hand drive early '71 240Z (10/70 series 1). That said, much of this i…

Hello everyone! I hope this article is informative to you. Please refrain from posts until I am done, approximately 10 posts. The main reason for this project for myself was because: 1. Previous owner had replaced the 90 degree hose on top of the tank with non-fuel hose and it was rotted and leaking gasoline. This HAD to be fixed one way or another. 2. Gas tank was 35 years old and, although I have never had issues with rust in the fuel lines, I know if not treated, the tank on the outside and inside would eventually rust (further). I already knew the gas tank on the outside top was rusty. 3. I enjoy working on my Z and if I can make it stronger than original and …

I am now selling the "Parking Light Upgrade Harness" that was mentioned earlier this month. After a lot of research and as far as I can tell, It will work on all 240Z's. If the 260Z or 280Z's headlight switch's plug are anything like the 240's, the new harness might even work for them as well. not sure yet. I'll do some more research on the 260 and 280Z's, but for now, I'm ready to take and recieve orders. And now for the final price, which has the S/H included in said price. After ordering, TAX, assembly labor and every thing else I put into these harness's, the final price is....... $37.00 inside the lower 48 states. The price will obviously be higher if I have t…

\ 1 Disconnect spark plug wires and fold back out of the way. 2 Remove spark plugs. 3 Disconnect fuel lines (send and return) at fuel rail near front of the head. Observe all high pressure fuel safety precautions. 4 Disconnect valve cover vent hose. 5 Remove valve cover. 6 Put transmission in neutral. 7 Use short 27mm socket to turn engine at crank. (when viewed from standing in front of car, turn crank clock wise) 8 Turn until timing mark on damper is lined up with "0" mark on timing gauge. This is top dead centre * 9 In cylinder #1 at front on engine, the piston top should now be visible through spark plug hole (flashlight or pokey screw div…

I thought I would post this up here instead of burying it in my build thread. Does any one have ideas on how to bench test a brake booster? I have an assortment of 5 or so small boosters. I would like to bench test them to see if any of them are good. Then restore the best candidate Thoughts?

How could I fiddle with old, rusty Z's for 15 years and not know about Electrolytic Rust Removal? Someone else mentioned it here, I Googled it and studied these articles: Electrolytic Rust Removal http://www3.telus.net/public/aschoepp/electrolyticrust.html http://www.buchanan1.net/rust.shtml Electrolysis Rust Removal http://www.htpaa.org.au/article-electro.php The process was cheap, didn't require any nasty chemicals, didn't produce any nasty chemicals, and seemed to produce good results, and since I have no shortage of old rusty Z parts lying around, I decided to give it a try. I went to the grocery store and bought a box of washing powder, which is simply sodiu…

Comparison Photos: 280z on left 240z on right Front (note 280z screw hole) Bottom Top Back Back Harness (Note white current loop on 240z and red voltage pickup wire on 280z) 280z back (Green is 12V and black is ground) 280z and 240z connector comparison. (Note the different locations for Gnd and +12V. It is neat to see the location for the tach signal input is in the same part of the can...clever engineering and evolution).

This is some excellent information as posted to our mailing list: >Hey guys! Does anyone know a rough estimated price_for a frame up >restoration? >The body of my 73 240Z isn't bad off but the more I hear you guys >talk...I think this is >the way I am going to want to go. Keep in mind I am not horribly >mechanically inclined >so this would most likely be done at a shop. (Need to find one of >those here in >Maryland too.) Hi Shannon: Let's just assure that the terms we use have the same meaning to both of us. "Restoration" - to return to "as new" condition. The "goal" of restoring a Classic Car is to return it in every detail to the cond…

I received an e-mail from mdbrandy and he mentioned finding this article on another website. He mentioned that it had been helpful to him, and felt it might help others. So, in the hopes that it will, here it is. The double line spacing between paragraphs is in case you print it out and use it as a checklist. Enrique Scanlon ============================================= I did this years ago, on another 240Z. Working mine up to that point in it's recovery. Since the first z was disassembled in a haphazard manner, (fixing one thing only to discover ANOTHER thing needed fixing which in turn.....ad nauseaum. Sound familiar?) I'll address your question from what I discovered…

Here is a guide to what you can expect if you plan to convert from fuel injection to early (round-top) SU carbs. My particular experience with this is a bit unusual - my early '71 240Z had been converted (rather poorly) to fuel injection when a prior owner had an '83 L28 installed. Rather than de-bug the injection installation, I decided to go back to carbs. But this guide will also be applicable to installing round-tops on any injected 280Z (or even ZX). Basic parts list - one pair round-top SUs, center linkage, pair of manifolds (including the balance tube with linkage), heat shield, return springs, fuel pump or regulator, fuel filter, fuel rail, air cleaner(s), choke c…
