Hubcap project

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I just recently acquired a set of hubcaps for one of my Z's. I have reviewed articles regarding the color of the cap (gray etc.) but I am looking for info regard the red color that is on the Z medaleon in the center of the cap. I have attached a picture regarding the center cap I am referring to.

Thanks in advance for all your input.

It is a red reflective plastic, like a reflector on a bicycle, with the 'Z' imbedded.  The ones on my 73 were faded to an almost orange color when I did a refurbishment on them.  I also painted the red to blue to match the color of the car.  At the time new old stock ones were insanely expensive.  I also left the inside scollops chrome instead of grey, balances the grey/chrome effect.

I've restored mine- here are some before and afters. As far as I can tell, the correct color is a matte version of the same grey on the tail light panel and grille. The centers age poorly, and cannot be machine polished without risking burning them. This was lotss of hand polish with plastic polish.
