E-31 Head Scratching (Pics)

Recommended Posts

I've been smoothing the intake and exhaust ports and will be matching port sizes as soon as my gasket comes in.

Does it look like the valves were unshrouded before the bigger valves were installed?  I don't know myself, all I've done is read and looked at pictures so I'm guessing they were?

EDIT: the E-31 was with a project car I bought so I know nothing about what was done before I got it.

Thanks for looking,

Cliff

Easy way to tell is just lay a HG against the chamber. I'd say NO to unshrouding has been done. You can still do it now if careful and would highly recommend it. Make sure you get rid of all the sharp edges and any spark plug threads showing! I'll try and find a pic of mine.

I was going to do an E88 head but decided to go ahead and use the E31 that already had the 1.73 & 1.38 valves installed.  For some reason I thought I'd save it??  Madkaw I'd love to see your's.  I can get the valves out pretty easy now if I need to for the unshrouding.  Might go ahead and put some shorter valve seals on there anyway, just in case the reground cam needs the room.

I just got my Z Therapy rebuild kit yesterday, yea!  Winter projects are moving along just fine.  :)

Yep-you have some decisions to make.

a .30 over L28-even with dished pistons will be high CR. IMHO, with no quench in dished pistons, it might not be the best option. Might need to much timing pulled. I think flat top L28 .030 over would put you around 11 to 1 , not sure what dished pistons would be.

L24 will be fun and I run full timing with that set-up. Maybe not as torquey as the l28, but I got 155RWHP with SU's. Like said-you will need to modify the block for bigger valves, but you can do that yourself.
