Once you throw on tires the incremental weight difference is not going to be noticeable. Get the wheels you like. If you are tracking/Auto-x the car, then buy some dedicated racing lightweight steelies.

The rewinds are lighter, but you will never notice the difference. I run Panasport racing wheels, they are better made and nearly the same weight.

I spoke to Les at Classic Datsun yesterday, he mentioned your car...

Are you saying that there are lighweight versions of the Panasports? Did you buy these through Les?

What size tires do you use?

The lightweight racing Panasports are prone to developing cracks in the spokes when used extensively on the street. At least they were 10 or so years ago...

I don't think the "racing" ones are forged, and they look similar to the heavier "street" ones. To be significantly lighter, they sacrifice longevity. There is a reason they're marked "for racing use only"!

Thanks Dan! I think you must be right...I called Panasport today.

16x7's (street) weigh about 19lbs

15x7's race weigh about 15 lbs

Forged wheels would be lighter and/or stronger.

Anyone have 15x7's on their Z? Pictures?

Check my gallery. I have 2 cars with 15x7's. I also have a set of Rewinds, but I don't think I have a picture of those in the gallery.

Depending on what size tires you get, 16x7's may rub the front fender lips.

I know you asked for 15's but these are 16X7 with a +6 offset with toyo tires

Lowered 1 inch rides very well.

Motorsport Auto have them for $999.00 15X7 are 1199.00.

I run lightweight panasports on my roadster and my 510. I had two sets for the Z but sold them a while ago. I have purchased all my panasports from Les's shop...I also am not aware of anyone ever cracking a panasport, race or otherwise from regular or race driving. They are a high quality cast wheel. The racing wheels are lighter, but don't bend as easily as a forged wheel does. Is unsprung weight that big of a deal for you? if so there are some other things to consider....

I would say that race driving is much harder on a set of wheels compared with daily driving unless you physically damage the wheel in a pothole or worse.

PS I had 15x7 panasport lightweight racing wheels with 205x50x15 Toyo RA-1 tires. I run Toyo's currently on my roadster.

Marty, thanks! I see Panasports on the blue Z and the Yellow Z. What size tire do you have on the Panasports?

I've personally seen cracked spokes on "racing only" Pana's. The geometry is the same, the material is the same, and there's less of it, no way around it, they're running at higher stresses. I'm not saying they are not a "high quality" cast wheel. But there absolutely is a REASON the lighter weight wheels are specified for racing use only. They have less fatigue life in them.

Street usage over 10's of thousands of miles is harder on wheels than multiple race seasons. The stresses of repeated 1-g braking and cornering for ~ an hour's usage per event are minimal compared to going over cobblestones, potholes, etc. etc. for 10,000 miles per year. Again, talking about fatigue life, not impact damage. If you don't put very many miles on your car, no big deal, but in any case, the lighter weight wheels will not last as long as the heavier ones.
