Diagram or Schematic for 1971 240Z ? Is there a link which shows exactly what the 1971 Datsun 240Z has under the hood, inside under the dash and so on? I'm amazed at how tough it is to find any such diagrams or schematic on the technical/mechanical guts of this classic. Thanks lots.

awesome many thanks....

Those are from a Clymer's manual. I posted those some years back.
The wiring diagram however, is incorrect for her car as a 71. It doesn't show the Accessory Relay nor the Rear Window Defog Grid.
Don't recall if Ata's vehicle is an Automatic or not, but that's another difference in the schematic that's not illustrated.
I've attached a slightly better diagram for a 71. It should be noted that almost ALL of the diagrams have some oddity/ommission that needs to be considered.
FWIW

Thanks E. Do you know if anyone has that same diagram in a Clean PDF?
That would be awesome, considering I probably overlook the other one a couple times a week.

I did some quick searching through the tech articles, because I distinctly remember uploading one, but no luck in finding it. I've searched with me as the author and using "wiring" and "diagram" and have too many results to try to pinpoint quickly.
I uploaded the first one I could find that I knew had both the Acc Relay and the Rear Window grid.
Take note however, that you often have to refer to two or three different diagrams for the early cars before you can say ... Ah... so that's how it's wired. Take a look at many of the diagrams where the Acc Relay is shown, and see if it doesn't show a second "blower" or some other anomalie.
Still looking

I think the one E posted is from the Haynes manual, page 169. It doesn't scan well because the paper is too thin and you get bleed through from the page behind it.

Thank you also, E.
Ours is a 4-speed stick ... It's a 240Z but my brother had the Z-Doctor (or maybe it was the dealer, not sure) replace it with a 260 engine some 10,000 miles ago. I was getting guidance from Arne in another space here on how to troubleshoot our Wiper Motor issue since the wipers quit on us about the time we chipped out the tar mat to inspect the floor, which was the impetus for requesting these schematics/diagrams. We had no clue what what what, we're novices who love the Z. ":0) But we sure do tip our hats to this crew!!! Man, oh man, what an excellent site; people here know their stuff ... again .... brilliant!
I printed each of the thumbnails and the PDF file; and they're excellent references that I'm sure my brother and hubby will also appreciate this weekend (if it doesn't rain) and we can troubleshoot some more.
I had a bit of a problem printing the PDF file for reasons unknown, it just printed one enlarged segment of the PDF linked/file, so I used the print-screen function when on screen, opened WORD, pasted there and modified so I could print the whole thing. When/if they get into the guts of the wiper motor problem before we sell it, I've still got the on-screen PDF to enlarge and zero in on the key points. If it turns out we sell it before we restore the functionality of wipers, it'll be an excellent addition along with maintenance records to give the new owner/buyer.
Thank you sooooo much; I'm almost wishing I were able to do all this myself! I'm definitely intrigued. ":0)Love the Z

Asta, in out off-forum communication you asked for clarification on the locations of some of the wiring connectors for the wipers. The diagrams that Dave posted should do most of it for you, but in regards to the firewall connector, I'm attaching a picture from my former yellow '71 when the engine was out. The wiper motor connector is indicated with the red arrow.
Rather than e-mail you directly, I figured I'd post here, where it may be of use to others as well.Arne - Former owner, HLS30-37705, 7/71, 905 red - now safely in Norway

Thanks again, Arne, wise move to post here so others can also benefit.
It's just not as easy as I thought it would be. I'm now wondering about the rubber plug which looks ghastly and may be a piece of the problem, remembering that although our Z is a California native, it is aged and lifelong on the California streets. Here are thumbnails (I hope) to show my degree of baffled: Love the Z

That second pic is likely the cowl drain. I have a 280Z so it's a little different in that I have two of those. One for the cowl drain and one for the AC evaporator drain.

Google query had lots of hits on cowl drains, but none appeared to be out issue. I did find a link with really good clues on some known 240Z issues, although they don't appear to be our concerns. Worth a look, I believe.

Not a cowl drain. That is the grommet that the wiring for the wiper motor passes through in the firewall. See attached.

Great! It looks very old and haggard, but perhaps why the problem exists. Hope this weekend our family can go through all the diagrams and schematics and follow your helpful clues to a resolution. Whew, feeling a little less lost.

What is the black box that is wrapped up in the wiring? I'm not familiar with any item such as that in the OEM wiring. If it is a Wiper Delay module, that may be the problem right there.
I have no idea what the wiper problem is, intermittent, non-functioning, slow operation.... so it's impossible to offer solutions.
You mention that they ceased operating at the time you chipped off the tar mat (good move by the way), so it is highly conceivable that you moved or removed a ground or disconnected some other key wire.

It looks like an Alarm of sorts. What she needs to do is check the connector on the firewall then follow those same wires over to the pass. side kick panel area.
the last time I checked. those wires go to a small 3-pin connector in the P.S. kick panel. Just look for those same colored wires from the firewall connector at the P.S. kick in a small 3-pin connector and one of them goes to a Larger 6-pin connector. and that is a blue/red wire.
I still say it's a problem in the P.S. kick panel area or the switch itself.

Not sure this photo from last year tells much, but perhaps. Your guess is definitely better than mine in terms of what this black box could be. When my brother returns from his trip, I hope he can give me some clues as well.

I have said it before and I will say it again. This forum is amazing. Without it my car (#009070)would not run, would not stop would not have lights, yada yada yada. I have 4 different 70/71 diagrams and none of them are as good as what is here on this thread. Working on making the lights signals etc all work.
So sorry for the thread ressurection but I had to say thanks. Richard.
