Default The great TEXAS Z Car (and foreign Car) rally - 2011

Okay, I have been toying with this idea in another thread for a while now and I have some ideas floating around. Since I am not aware of any regional forums I am putting this here.

I am trying to organize a classic car getaway in the hill and wine country of Texas. Think Fredericksburg.

A few things to note about this.

This IS a family friendly event. Spouses are welcome and encouraged.
This IS an event where classic car lovers get together to to share stories, and just hang out.

This IS NOT a competitive timed event. NO stage or sector times.
This IS NOT an event where every second of every day is mapped out for you.

My outline is this so far. This will take place in November/December time frame THIS YEAR.

I am thinking of picking a 'staging location' that has the following characteristics:

Bed and Breakfast, or moderately priced hotel (think between 100-200/night)
Large well lit parking lot to keep classic cars safe and to park trailers for those coming a long way.
Great scenic drives with interesting destinations within 30 min to an hour away.
Good food and entertainment close by to gather and talk about that days escapades.
Decent shopping near by for those who want to pick up an item or two
Away from a congested part of a large city where directions and parking can really be bad and/or confusing.
Close to a reputable garage or mechanic where repairs can be made
Close to a reputable parts house. (NAPA, Car Quest, Autozone, etc)

I have been thinking the hill country somewhere outside of Austin at first, but now I am leaning toward the Frederiskburg, TX. It checks more of the boxes.

My plan is to make this a 3 day, 2 night affair.
One cruise route will be organized per day, and it will be voluntary of course.
The rest of the time people can go as they please and see sights as they wish. Folks can pair up with their friends or not.

Think Casual. I am hoping to get enough attendance that a makeshift carshow can happen one evening. Probably the second night.

    Possible locations are places like:

    http://www.hangarhotel.com/index.html

This looks like a fun place which is car AND car show friendly. It has nice accommodations and seems very friendly and interesting. I love old airplanes so this is good for me.

I will begin a tentative list of attendees here.

Amazing outline it sounds better and better every time we talk about it. I have heard about how Frederiskburg is a very scenic part of TX.

Oh, man, I wish I could be there. Are you sure you want to do this in Nov/Dec? Springtime in the hill country would get ME all excited. I miss the endless fields of wildflowers. I'm not driving from Virginia to join y'all, but I'm just saying...

Hell, This sounds amazing. A little far to come from NZ though. My wife and I love this sort of event.
(or at least I do and she comes anyway)

    Good luck with this.

You know...... That's not a bad idea. I think we should consider doing this more than once a year if all goes well this winter.

Agreed. I am sure I will totally screw something up and forget to plan something or I will get lost and end up in some other state, but the more we try this the more we learn.

I totally understand how hard it is to get off work for something like this, and lets face it money is not just falling off trees for most of us.

Frank, I have no posted on there, as I wanted to keep it to CLASSIC Z's. I do not mean to come across as a snob but I find a younger crowd usually drives the new Z's and they tend to be the ones who do burnouts and get us all thrown out.

I would not mind inviting a few british car clubs to join us. A few classic Triumpsh or MG's would make this more colorful.

I would entertain the idea of putting this off until spring, but there are so many events during that time and they are quality events. LIke the Bluebonnet run. I would hate to make somebody miss that. Keeping this in Nov/Dec, should mean cooler weather, but not too cold. THis is Texas we are talking about.

I like those guys in the Houston Z club. They have opened their arms to me. I think I may have to take a chance and invite them. They have some stand up folks in that club. Just like Frank!

I am not to big into facebook Frank. I barely even use it. If you would like to post a link to it you are welcome. Or send me a link to their site and I will post a link to their facebook. I guess you can do that. Again, I just do not have the time for mybook or facepage usually.

I keep digging around to try to find some great roads around the hotel. I will post them and we can decide on a club rally route in the coming weeks.

The great TEXAS Z Car (and foreign Car) rally - 2011-3smap.jpg

Here is a route called the 3 sisters. I find that anyplace that motorcyclists love to ride, is usually quite fun for a nice sports car.

For clarification, how do you define "Classic Zs" for the purpose of this event? S30 only S30 & S130?

Lets call it 280ZX and below.

Again, I hate to come off as a snob. But their are tons of events where the newer cars get all the love. I just enjoy seeing classic and vintage cars more than newer ones...

Do you know where my Grandpa's 240z is? He sold it around 1994. I think it was a 72. It was orange with black interior and some sort of scissors style aftermarket crank up sunroof. I think it was sold to a fellow pharmacist and I think he was from Egg Harbor Wisconsin. At the time the car had between 32-36k original miles. He sold it for the lowly sum of $3000-$3500. My grandpa passed away a few years ago and I would like to know its whereabouts.

The cards are becoming less stacked in my case. I told my wife about it. Since she has no interest in cars without power windows I assumed she would not want to go. As it turns out she would very much like to spend a weekend exploring Texas. We moved here from Canada a few years ago but haven't seen very much of the state. This is an excellent opportunity to do so. All I have to do is find a babysitter. I'd give it a 75% chance that we will be there. Thanks again for organizing this!

    Bravo steve!

I am in the same boat. I want my wife to come, but I will need to find a sitter as well. My 3 year old is quite demanding.

Keep plucking away. I figure we have until Nov Dec to get this done. I will contact the hotel this week to see what they have available.

Not sure where you guys live but, sounds like we need to get together some time. I have daughter who is 2 1/2. Hopefully my sister in law won't mind watching her that weekend.

Not to speak for Andrew "ZCurves" but he was at my house yesterday robbing parts of my 280zx parts car and he said he thinks he is going to attend as well.

There was quite a big attendance at a Z car show by my house, I will have to get the word out to them and see how many will be able to join us.

No great plans can be done without the consumption of BEER.

Therefore I propose that we gather at The Saint Arnold Brewery in Houston, Texas to discuss the 'Texas Z Car (and foreign car) Rally' further. How about in a couple of weeks on a Saturday??? Who can turn that down??
(shameless plug : http://www.saintarnold.com/ - cuz I luv's me some Saint Arnold's). Are there any Z Club of Houston members reading??

Assuming that I am in the country and not traveling in Asia for my job, I will definitely plan to attend. Already ran this past my better half and she is interested in attending as well.

I live in Austin and have already made our local Z club aware of this (Capital Z of Texas or better known as CZOT) and so I expect you may see a few other attendees from the Austin area as well.

I am also open to help with the organization of this especially if there is anything around the Austin area that would be of interest to people. There are really great drives around Lake Travis and this is far enough away from Austin proper that you will be away from the crowds and congestion. It's also not that far from Georgetown and so it could make for a really nice drive with great restaurant stops along the way.

The sooner you lock down the dates, the better chance that I have to make my schedule work given all of the trips that I make to Asia annually.

Look forward to meeting you all face to face.

    Mike.

    UPDATE:

I have contacted the events planner at the hanger hotel and have made the following decisions for better or worse. I tried to take into consideration the holiday times and the weather. I also took into consideration some great advice Zcurves gave me.

We have the weekend of DEC 3rd reserved with amended prices to give us a bit of a discount, room rates are now down to 159/night fri and sat which is not bad.:

    The schedule looks like this:

    FRIDAY Dec 2nd
Arrive at the hanger hotel sometime in the afternoon on Friday December 2nd.
    Check in and get settled.
Have fun in Fredericksburg on your own or with friends, go explore some roads and have fun.
Meet for a dinner either at the hotel OR a designated restaurant (GROUP ACTIVITY)

    Saturday Dec 3rd
Wake up at a leisurely time for breakfast (after all this is a vacation of sorts)
Assemble for an morning cruse at 10am (GROUP ACTIVITY)
Eat lunch after the cruise as a group or go your own separate ways for the remainder of the day.
Saturday evening, I want to have either an impromptu car show for those who want to participate, OR another cruise
Dinner at the hotel or in fredericksburg maybe hit up a local brewery.

    Sunday Dec 4th

Sunday breakfast again at a leisurely time
Assemble for a nice shot on the flight line in front of the hotel and airplanes. I have to contact the airport manager about this, but it is not at all uncommon for them to accommodate. (GROUP ACTIVITY) so I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Break and say goodbyes and go home

I do not want to make too many group meetings or the daily schedule to rigorous. I am counting on most people being independent and doing their own thing. There is NO SHORTAGE of fun to be had in and around Frederickburg. For those who want to stay together with their Z friends, that is awesome too. But the point of this is to enjoy cars, friends, and relax. Not to have every moment planned and have us all jumping from one activity to another. I hope that approach is acceptable.

I only wanted ONE group activity a day, and the rest of the time you can spend just sleeping, seeing the sights, shopping, eating, driving, etc. Going off in groups or by yourself with your spouse or alone. Does not matter to me. This is a getaway for you.

I want to invite the first Gen RX7 club of houston and the british car club of houston if that is okay. They are a fun bunch of guys and love the classic import car hobby as much as we do.
also if you know of any folks with classic Porsches, they are more than welcome.
I do not expect a large turnout, but we may be surprised!

Anyway. If there is enough interest, I will get some decals made up and maybe some Tshirts.

Stay tuned. This is picking up momentum slowly.

Summary of who is a going to make it.

Awesome! So we can expect between 6-10 Zs, and a few other clubs that will join us there. Sounds like a pretty cool car show Saturday.

When I called the hotel to reserve a room for Saturday, I was asked if I was with the Corvette club??? I said I was not.

That is my bad. I have to reserve some rooms today. She will hold some rooms for me up to 10 if I give her my credit card. I will put the rooms under the name

    Texas Classic Z car club

You can reserve a room under that name and get the reduced price.
Burl, give me a day to get the rooms reserved. I also have to talk to the airport manager to get us a photo day on the flightline.

    OKAY UPDATE:

I have 10 rooms reserved for us the weekend of December 3rd. You have to mention that you are with the TEXAS classic Z car club to get the discount.
I certainly hope to see many of you there, and I certainly hope my Z is running again. This gas tank project is growing every day.

Okay, I have established permission from the country airport manager to have our carshow on the ramp in front of the hotel.
We can work out the details, but in general, it is limited to 60 cars, which I am sure we will not get close to. There is no fee.

But it is contingent on if they are still using this airport as a forest fire fighting location. I will keep track of this up until the day of the car show.

Since this is Texas related..... Would anyone have set of these wheels they would either a) like to sell or b)trade for some 15" swastika wheels? Name: 280zx wheel.jpg

Okay, just an update... thought I would put some friendly reminders about what to bring to this...
I am stealing these ideas from this months issue of Classic Motorsports..

During a classic rally bring parts that make sense. Naturally you cannot bring every spare part you have, but certain things may come in handy. Oil and filter. A set of metric sockets and wrenches. Several rolls of paper towels. Duct Tape, yes I said it. Extra fuses, and some vacuum line. A can of fix a flat is useful in an emergency.

Also, car prep is key to these. Make sure all the parts of the car in good working order. Mostly the brakes and tires. Make sure the system is up to the task of some spirited driving and keep in mind that this is not a race, just a bunch of like minded folks who love cruising in their Z. WE can have a Z autocross or track day later if things work out.

I will try to bring a bunch of stuff in my support truck (either Uhaul or full sized pickup if I can borrow one). Jumper cables and the like will be very useful.

WE still have plenty of rooms available from what I can tell. I have not heard a peep from either the first Gen RX7 club NOR the Houston British car club. I may have to be more persistant.

Anyway, this is still happening and wanted to keep it up on the board to let others know that I have not forgotten about this. It is still moving forward!

I will be booking my room at the end of this month. Good call on the idea of extra parts to bring on the trip. I love the Classic Motorsport magazine as well!

End of the month bump to keep interest up. I will start pricing out a rental truck and flatbed to tow my Z up to the event and provide emergency assistance for any stranded Z that may break down.

I may look into getting some stickers or Tshirts made up.

I would love to be there but I have family and business obligations. Not to mention the car is not 100% road-worthy( I guess you have to have registration, insurance, and working brake lights..)
You guys have fun. I need to meet up with some of you guys here in the Houston area and get back in the car scene.

I've been talking with a long time friend, and if we can fit this into our work schedules, we may just pop in on this event. Being self employed, I know I can make it, but having driven cross country many times before, I don't think I want to go 1600+ miles (each way) without a capable co-pilot, considering my car is a 73, and hasn't been restored, just maintained.

First class would be a reliable source of cold Bud in the bottle, some good Tex-Mex and a bar tender that will be willing to tune into the Ravens-Browns game on the 4th. I aint hard to please. Still in the planing phase, we want to come out via I-40, and return across I-10 then up the blue ridge parkway, or I-95 if we have weather in the mountians. Should make for a nice 7 or 8 day road trip, with a cool place to law over in December. Gives me like 6 weeks to get things strait before going to the Head Shop convention in Vegas in Feb.

Somebody who wants to play hero..... show up with a fresh set of belts and radiator hoses and a length of heater hose for everyone to draw from. That water through the manifold and around the block aberation is liable to leave someone standing by the road.

Default T-shirt and Magnet logo I am working on for the cruise...

The great TEXAS Z Car (and foreign Car) rally - 2011-z-t-shirt-logo.jpg

I am wondering who would be interested in these.
I think it will be getting them made in a long sleeve T shirt as well as a large Rally style magnet.

Can I get a show of interest so I know how many to make. If the costs are in line, I will get them whipped up and bring them with me!

Guys, I am having my mom come down to watch the little one, so I am in on this; but I have one question. This would be by far the biggest road test I have ever put my Z through in my short ownership. Are we driving there as a group? Or are we all leaving on our own and hoping everyone makes it on their own? I'd feel a hell of a lot better driving in a group...

I think I'll be towing my Z to the event. Since the car hasn't been on the road that long since the 80's, I'm playing it safe and also bringing extra parts/tools.

    Anyone else towing?

I am towing mine just to being extra parts as well. Plus if anybody has any trouble we will have a rescue vehicle.
I am currently pricing an auto transporter AND truck to pull it with. $$$$$$ dollars.

Maybe I can get my dad to let me borrow his truck.

Sounds great. Really wish I could attend, but Texas is just a bit too far to drive...

Driving versus towing is a matter of trust. Trust in the work you've done to your Z. Trust in the parts you've used on your Z. Trust in the totality of your Z itself. Driving such a short distance will also provide you invaluable insight as to what else might need to be done to make your Z the "perfect" Z for you. Without such information, you may still be shooting in the dark without laser-sights.

I was visiting with Ben yesterday at a small car show. I told him that I wouldn't hesitate half a second to gas and go anywhere in mine. Anywhere. Why did I say that? Because I trust the totality of the car. I trust what I've done and what I've paid others to do for me.

The ONLY downside I can think of is the minimal risk of some road rash and the even smaller risk of a collision of some sort.

In short, there's nothing to stop you from driving your Z except you.

    Well put Frank...

Hey on a side note, I took my Z out for a thrashing at Grandsport speedway this weekend. Have some cool video of me catching up in a a guy in a Z06, who obviously needed lessons.

But I wanted to say that I tried your kitchen drawer liner trick you mentioned to me years ago. WORKED Like a charm. LIke having Racing buckets for the total price of $1.99. HAHA

By the way, my Z ran flawlessly.

So I have managed to plan around all of my travel to Asia and will have this weekend free.

Just made reservations at the hotel and am all set on that front. My wife will be joining me as well.

Am planning to drive, not tow. I am coming from Austin so it is not very far. I do a lot of my own work and agree with Frank on trusting your work, parts, etc. Never the less, I will have a care package with me of basic tools, parts, etc just in case.

Am also interested in a reasonably priced T-Shirt as well.

Really looking forward to meeting you all. I think this is going to be a blast.

    Mike.

CALL the HANGER hotel today if you can. They still have rooms available, but they will no longer hold them for me.

Tell them you are with the Texas Classic Z car club and get the discounted rate.

Apparently 5 of us have reserved rooms.

A buddy of mine is going to bring his Porsche 944 turbo, (former Z owner and general great guy) so we are building up a nice little group. I expect a few more to trickle in.

I am holding off a bit longer for shirts/magnets until I get a proper head count. Look forward to seein gall of you there!

Called in to book. Lady answered after a dozen rings, said the phones were going nuts. Will call me back.

Ben (and anyone else), we can drive over together if you'd care to do that. I'd like to leave here noonish on the 2nd if that fits your schedule.

Frank I am down with that. I even thought about 11AM. Frank, what do you think about the weekend prior Houston guys could get together for a group tech session? I know you are confident in your car, but it might be fun to have a get together to make sure everyone's car is ready to go.

That's a decent idea, especially for some of the newer Z owners. That will assuage some anxiety and build a bit of confidence. We can meet at my place if desired. Get me a list of travelers and I'll PM my address to them...

WOW!-- we've been offline for awhile, and this sounds like a fantastic event.
It's something Kathy and I would love to attend, especially since I used to live in Belton.
But as the gentleman from MD said, it's a little far for us to travel, this time around.
If the T-shirt is "flamboyant" enough, maybe we could capture an XL for the collection.

I used the term "flamboyant." I agree with the above posts which cited many events
    nowadays in which a nice early original, whether restored or not, is practically ignored;
while the newer models with the Lambo doors, 9000 watt sound sytems, and glitzy
paint schemes which make them look like they belong in a circus (or at least in a
professional drifting event), get all the attention and awards.

We have been contemplating coming back down to TX on a trip to share "Lucky 13" if
we could put together a sequential program of events. North to South down I-35, for
instance. As an example, starting w/ Cowtown Z Club, working down thru Capital, then
San Antonio, then over to Houston. But I'll be the first to tell you, 2000 miles +/- each
way in a pickup/trailer rig that gets 11-13 MPG gets right expensive in fuel alone.

But not impossible. Mad Mike Taylor said he would help me put it together if I was serious.

Well if this goes well, and I do not mess things up too much, I will be doing this again. What really makes these cars worth owning is taking them out for a twisty drive with friends.

Not sure if a lot of people woul be interested in this, but the local Austin area Cars and Coffee gathering meets the first Sunday of every month and it turns out that the last day of our Texas Rally event will be on the first Sunday in December.

I have been to it a couple of times and have met some really cool people and have seen some pretty neat cars as well. It's held in downtown Leander and so its about a 20 minute ride from my house. I mapped the distance from Fredericksburg to Leander and it's just under 100 miles, but for those coming back to Austin or heading home to Dallas it could be a pretty nice ride to end the event. It would also be pretty cool to have a caravan of 5-6 Z's (or more) show up to this as usually I am the only one in a Z out of a few hundred cars. That would be quite a showing! Not sure how conducive this might be to our friends from Houston, as I think it in in the wrong direction, but it would still be neat if we could show up as a group.

In any case, really starting to look forward to this and meeting everyone face to face.

I will most likely be able to swing by the Austin C&C on my way back to Dallas. What time would we need to leave Fredericksburg Sunday?

I think that officially Cars & Coffee starts around noon, but a lot of people start rolling in earlier than that so they can get a reasonable place to park or congegrate with other similar car models. They are pretty well organized and usually have spots reserved for the more common models or at least major brands (like Mopar). If there were going to be multiple Z's it would be great if we could all be together.

So if we wanted to be there around 11:00 to 11:30 I suspect that we would have to leave Fredericksburg at 9:00 or 9:30. It's about 100 miles and depending on road conditions, etc that would be ample time to get there. Nort sure what exactly is planned for Sunday AM, so this may be a little early for some.

They were kind enough to donate several Just SU's DVD's to this cruise as prize handouts.

Folks that is just a classy thing do to. They volunteered those DVD's as door prizes, and that to me shows how much they support our little classic Z club.
I have seldom found a vendor so interested in making its current and potential customers so happy.

THanks ZTHERAPY, you are a very class act!

Zedyone, if you are still planning on making shirts I could come up with a few designs in Photoshop if you haven't already made one.

I have a few designs I am looking at and getting prices on, but I have having a heck of a hard time finding somebody that will produce a small quantity without charging me over 20 bucks a shirt. I do not mind making the initial outlay of money if I know I can at least break even.

How much would you guys be willing to pay for a Datsun shirt if it had this on the front left pocket:

THAT is an attractive logo, Stephen. I'd surely take one.

Are you still thinking Tees or have you considered buttoned shirts?

I have only considered Tee's, long sleeve and short sleeve, but I can check into embroidered Polos or button shirts if you like.

I am going to up the ante for these shirts guys. I found a place that will digitize the logo for 40 bucks ( I will eat that myself ) and then charge about 15 bucks to embroider this logo on any shirt we want. I plan to hit up old navy for some polo shirts, which are about 12 dollars to 20 dollars each. If you have a very special request, let me know SOON. Frank if you need a button up shirt let me know or will a nice polo do?

The cost of the shirts will be the embroidery fee plus the cost of the shirt, I plan on making Zero dollars off this.

I also think the logo would look good on the back of the shirt if it was large enough.

My age gives me away. I've worn nothing but buttoned shirts for nearly 68 years. I feel sloppy and ill-dressed in anything but a buttoned shirt. Sue gets so pissed at me....

Not sure if I will be banned from a shirt but my wife informed me our daughters Christmas pageant at school is on that Saturday, we might not be coming now. Are we even sure Jesus was born in December?! I'd still like a shirt.

Frank I will get you a button shirt from old navy when I get my shirts. The rest of us will get polo shirts.

Frank was the first guy to ever help me out in the classic z world in Houston. I am happy to help

I'm in for two shirts. Prefer polo but definitely OK with T shirts. Large for both. Just let me know how to get the $$$ to you.

I am going to swing by old navy this week.
The design got digitized by the embroidery lady this weekend. So shirts are going to happen. Can i get a PM from people with sizes they need. I have lost count and my free time is shrinking daily.
