If I still had mine, I would. From here that would be about 12-1300 miles each way. That's do-able.

Driving mine from San Diego. One of my best buds has a place in Glendale AZ so I am set. He also has a major large garage that he just buils so I have a place to shine her up too. San Diego will host 2014.

I don't really want to respond to this thread with that Avatar showing. Could be bad Karma. That car color hits a little too close to home.

Depends on what you are driving...
Took me three days to get to Phoenix from Vista {San Diego}... When I tried to drive the BRE Baja Z back to Florida. Gave up on the original idea of driving the car home - when I got to Phoenix, then Bob Bondurant helped me raise the coil overs high enough to get the car loaded on a transport.. Flew home from there and the car arrived three days later.

    Road Trip anyone?

That's what I'm thinking, Carl. Just gathering some ammo to get my bride to agree to the 1300 mile run. It'll be a butt breaker but should be fun, too.

It was just under 1,000 to Nashville, over a 1,000 to Savannah, more than 1,300 to Florida and it's 991 miles to the Tail of the Dragon (which I drive non-stop on the return leg). Done it in the 240 and with the Z on a trailer. Plan ahead, get the car prepped, bring spare parts, drive in a group and enjoy the ride....

I am surprised at the low chatter on the ZCON 2012 thread. I would think that it would be quite busy now as the event is less than a week away. I am very excited about going, and looking forward to meeting all the Z-folks and participating in most of the events. This will be my first ZCON. I am still trying to work out trailering my car to Phoenix. I have the tow vehicle but the trailer I am borrowing is a bit iffy – not sure when it will be available. Hoping to arrive early on 16 Sept, but may not get their till 17 Sept due to trailer. I’ve been spending a quite a bit of time cleaning the car up. I have even been underneath the car with cleaner and a toothbrush trying to get things cleaned up – of course I’m cleaning the car as well. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

I will not get there until the 19th and I am driving the G35 Sport Coupe instead of the Z. I want to be comfortable. I think I am going to miss the car show too.

    Default ZCON here I come!

Well, I am still very excited about the ZCON 2012 and my journey has begun. Attached is a pic of my Z on the trailer behind the Jimmy. Also shown is the futile attempt to put saran wrap over the front of the hood, Koito's and windshield. The Saran wrap lasted for about 10 mins then was flapping in the breeze so I took it off. Also had to stop shortly thereafter to more the car forward on the trailer. I was getting some wobbles on the downhills and the moving the car forward cured the problem. Anyway, the Z handled the ride well with no further issues. She is a trailer virgin and really enjoyed the pampered ride from San Diego.

One of the pleasant surprises here was the timeshare set-up. Its a huge 2 bedroom condo with it's own garage. Needless to say, I am thrilled about keeping the car in the garage here, and it is a very good size garage - see attached. Plenty of room to touch-up and detail. I will register tomorrow and try and post some pictures of the cars at the hotel. Looking forward to the show. Cool cactii here

    Default some pics from ZCON

Went to Registration at the hotel and picked up my goody-bag and badges. The registration room looked very organized and ready for a huge rush. I got there somewhat early, so processed through pretty quick. I saw a couple Z's in the wash area and in the parking lot, so thought I'd post some pics. Tonight is the opening reception, so that should be a lot of fun. I scribbled 'motorman7' on my badge so other classiczcar people could identify me. We'll see if that works.

    Default Opening Night. ZCON 2012

Got a few more pics of cars out in the parking lot before the opening ceremonies. Noticed a couple of trailers out in the parking lot. Can't wait to see what's in those. There are a couple of GTR's here. Would sure like to test drive one. The appetizers were good, with a south western flair. There were about 150 people at the opening. Mr Matsuo and Mr K's son were also in attendance. Won't have many pictures today as it's detailing day - for me. Most pics will be coming tomorrow.

Hey Rich, I was there last night as well. Agree, it was a very nice evening all the way around, well organized, plenty of food and nice atmosphere. By the way the 1971 yellow 240Z you photographed is one of my Z cars.
I'm bringing a different one to the show tomorrow. I live in Scottsdale so have the luxury of being able to bring down any of my Z's. Also just posted my early 260Z in the classifieds section. If there is any interest from anyone at the show, I'd be happy to arrange to see it. I'll look for your name tag.

    Default Detailing the '70

OK,OK,OK, so everyone wants to see the detail pics. Well, here they are. Also, I have met Mitsuo San before, can you tell? We had a great photoshoot with Japanese Nostalgic several years ago. It was great to meet him and he loved the car. I will post the pictures someday. Never saw the Japanese Nostalgic article though. Hopefully I will get a chance to chat with him again tomorrow.

    Best regards,

    Default ZCON 2102 Pics

Wow, lots of nice cars at the show today. I got to experience the official ZCCA judging which was pretty cool actually. I was not considered for the Gold Medallion Award, but it was nice to get some comments from the judges. Also got some tips from some of the more experienced members. Dan (AZ240Z) had his gorgeous persimmon 240Z there. Looks like he did very well in the judging, so I had to get a pic of my car next to his. Also got a pic of me with Mr. Matsuo. It was nice to see him again and he was very happy to see the car. Did I mention it was hot? Over 100 deg F I am sure. Will post some more pics following this.

    Default ZCON pics part 2

Here's some more pics. There were some exceptional cars there. I love the ZZZAP Z and the Black Pearl. There was also a light blue metallic 280 there with just 18K miles on it. Also saw a gorgeous white pearl 300ZX turbo that was very impressive. A number of these are up for the gold medallion award. Mr. Matsuo gave a short speech at the event. There were also quite a few of the newer model 300ZX vehicles. That group definitely had the largest attendance. I think just Dan (AZ240Z) and I had the only two stock 240Z. All of the rest were modified.

Dan's Z is indeed very nice and he has improved its quality since Pierre's Z did the initial restoration. Dan if you are monitoring this thread, Great car and good luck with the Gold Medallion.

Yes. Keep the pictures coming. I wish I could be there. Putting your ClassicZcars.com user name on your badge is a great idea. I talked to Madkaw for quite a while at a show this past summer and didn't even realize it was him until he recognized a post where I mentioned his car the following week! Have fun everyone.

[QUOTE=26th-Z;410537]Hey! Matsuo san is there! Great! Spend some time talking with him. He's great![/QUOTE

Chris, it was definitely a pleasant supprise that Matsuo san was at our 2012 convention. I had met him at the '04 convention and had his picture taken with my car. And, once again,
one of the highlights of this show was when he was kind enough to sign my "OK inspector" decal.

    Hey Dan,
Was that the '04 convention?! That's when I met him. Time flies! Feeling kind of sorry for myself for not making it out there. I haven't spent much time in that area of the country and want to. Probably the thing I enjoy the most about conventions is the 'local flavor'. From everything I hear, the convention is going very well. Have fun!

Bob, thanks for the kind words and the experienced advise you have posted for everyone. I think you used the analogy that "judges were looking for fly sh*t in pepper" and, while watching them
judge my car, I would have to agree. They all had nice comments about the car and I was judged for the Gold Medallion award, but not very confident, given the scrutiny of those judges.

It is still a terrific experience and well worth the self-inflicted flogging one must endure reaching for the gold ring made of that mysterious unobtainium material.

Chris, that was indeed the "04 convention. This is only my second convention, probably not on the scale of recent conventions, but I think very well organized and at a terrific venue. Hotel and track withing throwing distance, organized day trips to towns of interest such as the red vistas of Sedona, and the tour of the Nissan North American test facility 45 minutes south of the hotel which I am looking forward to. Looks like the 2014 convention will be in San Diego, so close that I'll probably need to try again at another show.

As one of the judges for both the show and gold trophies I can personally attest to the quality and cleanliness of Dan's car. He deserved every trophy and award he got.

I'm just staring into my PC trying to think of something to say, other than a simple "Thanks". You, and Classiczcars, have all helped to provide me with the motivation, a huge wealth of knowledge, sometimes help sourcing really neat parts, and just a great place to spend time.

As many of you probably already know, I bought this car new in Tucson on March 25, 1971, and, when Nissan started the "Restoration" program, it became an obsession with me to restore this car to the condition it was in when new. I promise that I am not going to give you my life story, just that "The Bucket List" is finally starting to get smaller, and I have been able to revisit some of the same excitement and feeling after 41+ years.

Rich, it was really great to meet you and see what you have done with your really nice survivor car. That patina of originality should always remain untouched.

The neat thing is, I never want to stop tinkering and making it better.

So, Thanks to all for acknowledging what Zulaytr, one of my biggest motivators along with Kats since the 2004 ZCON, I, and a few others have been fortunate enough to experience.

    Hi Marty,

As a guy who always sees the glass half full, I took second to Dan’s first. The reality is that there were only two cars in our class, so it could also looks like I finished last. For now I will stick with second.

I must honestly say that Dan’s Z is the best stock restored Z that I have ever seen. I learned a lot from the viewing. Also learned a lot from the judging so it was a very good experience over all. The attention to detail is incredible. I can only say that I have been very lax in some items.

The other reality is the car will never be a Gold Medallion winner. That is not really my goal for the car. My goal is to just clean it and keep it as is, a minimally refreshed survivor ( I did clean up the engine zinc and block paint – more for ‘uniformity’ than anything else). I like it that way. I always enjoy showing it and am very proud to own it.

I was anticipating a “Best Survivor” possibility as noted on the ZCON 2012 website, but that never materialized. Not sure if it was an oversight or they just forgot that they posted it on the website.

One of the best parts of the car show was spending some time with Mr Matsuo. He always seems to take special interest in my car and spent a lot of time checking it over. I also got some great pictures of him with the car as well. His PowerPoint presentation Saturday night was awesome. It was great to relive a little of the Z history through his presentation. Jay (Espirit) did a great job translating.

I think the one thing I walked away with is that there are very few stock early 240Z’s out there. Seems as though most have succumbed to modification or decay. It makes me want to take care of my Z all the more. So all in all, it was a very good experience.

    Best regards,
    Rich

I finally got the judging sheets in the mail for my car from the 2012 ZCON, which I think was about 4 months ago. Not sure why it took so long, but nice to finally see the sheets. In general, I am not too disappointed with the assessment. Most of the write downs can be attributed to the fact that the car is 40 years old, so point deductions for wear are a given.

I thought I had the car pretty dog gone clean, but there were still some areas that were marked off for dirt. Will have to do a better job with the detailing. Should have had my daughter there, she details the car much better than I do.

There definitely is a difference in judging standards among the three judges. The Exterior judge was quite generous. The Interior and engine judges were much more hard-line.

The interior judge deducted points without even saying what was wrong on half the items. He did catch a couple small things (on the few that he did comment on) that I was not aware of, so that is good to know.

The engine judge filled in all the comments and deducted a lot of points for dirt. Not much I can say about that, I thought the motor was pretty clean. He took off points for the original factory weld on the oil pan. I guess your supposed to trash your original factory oil pan and buy a newer one? Anyway, that's my only beef. Otherwise, good job guys!

Yea, I feel you pain, I drove my car from Pittsburgh to Cleveland in 08 in the poring rain and just hosed off and dried the car for the judging and they nicked me for having dirt on me exhaust pipe.

A lot of people were complaining about the wet and mud that day and the points taken off. I also had points taken off for scratches on the glove compartment key hole. I am the original owner and the key has never been in the lock so how did it get scratched up. Still lost 2 points for that.

The judges must have been real tough out there, I scored something like 275 and most of my points were from the engine area. My interior had dust in all the vents. Something like 4 points for that. I think the scoring was a little easier in Cleveland.

Anyway learned a lot, you can never be too clean.

I think it is not so much pain as it is disappointment in what is considered important in judging. It’s the whole Pam Anderson debate: do you like the original or do you like the new modified version. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the ZCCA judging tends toward the later while I prefer the former. In the case of ZCON judging:

    1. A seat with new upholstery with the wrong or modified pattern would score better than an original seat that sags in the middle
    2. New carpet with the incorrect pile would score better than the original carpet that is faded.
    3. An air cleaner that is painted an off color orange would score better than an original with a scratch.
    4. An engine with fresh decals and a later model oil pan (no welds) would score better than an original (low serial number) car that had a welded oil pan and no decals on the air cleaner.

That’s what is disappointing to me. Unfortunately, that is the way the cars are judged. There are no bonus points for having the original 40 year old parts on your car. Bring on the silicon implants and liposuction.

    Just my thoughts…Peace out

My scores were fair, although I thought I did a fairly good job of cleaning things after the rain we had, in 2008. At least I didn't see any comments like "non-stock radio" or " non-stock seats" like I got once at a regional show (for DD class.)

Yes, I would agree too that the judging was very fair except for the write down on the oil pan weld and the lack of air cleaner decals. This is the way my low serial number car came out of the factory, so to be marked off for that is wrong. However, since I was nowhere close to 270 points, I won’t say much beyond this.

I think the deductions probably depend on the class you were entered in. Otherwise you might want to keep an eye out for a free oil pan or a free set of decals.

No! If you are in the stock class, the "newer modified" version should get you the same point deduction as if the original was half worn out. 5 points. Now, maybe the ZCCA has decided to score differently, but it sounds to me as though you got an inexperienced judge or two. That shouldn't happen at a ZCCA convention. Not in the stock class. Again, I would write a letter and bitch. Go on their web site (if it's working) and bitch.

Dan I am way late to this discussion, but let me say do not get mired down in the details, your car is stunning! I know you are proud to have it, and you should be.

Car shows are an anamoly to me. I have been disappointed many times at how the judging gets done. But my disappointment came from the fact that I had not taken the time to do more. I have learned that car shows are primarily about cleanliness. And in my county, it is pretty much the only thing that matters. My z would not score half of what your car did. I think you should keep posting pics of your car, as your engine is an inspiration to so many of us.

Congrats and I am proud to be on the same car forum as you

OK, sent a letter our to the ZCCA director, Chris Karl. Will see how it goes. This is what I sent.

It was great to meet you at ZCON 2012. It was my first ZCON and I really enjoyed the experience. As I live out here on the west coast, I am looking forward to ZCON 2014.

Below in italics is the write-up on the ZCON 2012 judging that I posted to the classiczcars.com site. I think it is a very fair assessment, and as I noted, overall the judging was done very well. However, a number of members prompted me to bring the ‘welded oil pan’ deduction to your attention.
My car is a low serial number 240Z, HLS30-02614. The stock oil pan for the early 240’s had a weld and metal insert to prevent cracking due to vibration (so I am told). For my car, this is the original factory oil pan that came with the car and it is completely stock. If it did NOT have a weld, points should have been deducted. However, I was deducted points for having the correct stock original oil pan. Just wanted to pass that on. As I was nowhere close to 270 points this really is not a big issue, but I did want to let you know.

I did have one other issue with the event that was stated on the website:

    * However, the ZCCA recognizes that bringing a Gold level car to the convention should have some
benefits. For 2012, the convention committee has agreed to honor these vehicles with a display area, a
special award and a "Best Survivor" category on the People's Choice voting ballot.

The reality here is that a gold medallion car is not going to be a ‘Best Survivor’. A ‘Best Survivor’ vehicle typically infers that less than 10% of the car has been improved or received replacement parts. This includes exterior condition, paint, interior and engine; the entire vehicle. I would venture to say that 95%, if not all of the gold medallion winners exceed the 10% improvement criteria. It would make more sense to judge the entire field of cars and judge based on least amount of restoration that a vehicle has seen and it’s condition. In this way, you would find more Z’s that have been minimally restored. ‘Gold Medallion’ and ‘Best Survivor’ are pretty much mutually exclusive terms.

Anyway, just wanted to pass this on. Thanks again for all your work with the ZCCA.

The ZCCA declared the "Best Survivor" award to recognize and have previously awarded Gold Medallion Z's attend the convention. For a previous awarded car to attend, in most cases, it is an expensive trip since they have nothing to gain. They probably "mis" named the award. It was not intended to imply the car was a survivor or unrestored car again somebody came up with an award without really applying total logic to it.

Since 1995, the first ZCCA Convention, only 12 truly stock Z's have been awarded the Gold Medallion and out of that 12 only 5 have been from the 240Z model. In 2002 they created the Gold Cup Award for the Modified cars. So the message here is that to attain a Gold Medailion is very difficult and it is not given and treated lightly. Are the judges experts? Unfortunately not but they do try their best. The key problem is there is not documentation regarding ongoing production changes, dates, etc when they occurred or production modifications, like a weld, that can be reviewed by the judging team prior to an event. A few years ago several people attempted to start that docuementation process but it is a major undertaking. If anyone has ever been involved with NCRS judging for a Corvette all of that documentation is readily available to both the owners and the judging team. The key to a Gold Medallion, as I am sure Dan (the 2012 Gold Medallion winner) will attest is the car has to 100% correct and every spec of dirt, grease etc must be delt with. They do pick fly sh-- out of pepper when being judged.

Honestly, I really must commend the ZCCA for upholding a very high standard. This is very key to our ‘hobby’/addiction and in line with what you would find at any Concours event. I truly have no complaints about the dirt mark down or any other items that were flagged during my cars inspection (other than the oil pan). They were all correct and the experience was highly educational for me, well worth the entry fee. If I had to do it again, I would. And, the judges are to be commended for their attention to details. This is very important to the collector. They found items that I had never seen before, even though I have had the car in my possession for almost 4 years now. I will use this info to correct some of the items, while others will remain as they are indefinitely. Again, it was truly a very nice event. Thanks again for the input.

    Best regards,
    Rich

I usually recommend you get some Z friends or experienced car-show goers, or a Z club, and give everyone paper & pencil to write own things you should look into (relative to your model, class or goal, NOT their idea of a "show car") and you later go through the sheets to see if you did miss something that should be looked into. Things like "needs a bigger stereo or video screens" would not be appropriate for a stock class 240Z, but might be for a super-modified 350Z, but all those eyes going over the car should probably catch at least several things you didn't, even if you should throw those ideas off the final list.

I suppose you could use a judge's critique from a local, "A.M.M.Y." judged car show, but I really wonder if those kinds of judges know what's what on your specific car/model, unless all they are about is cleanliness.
