Hey, just bought a 1977 Z that im waking from a long +15 year comma. Loloking for guidance as to what i should do and in what order. Compression check done. All Cylinder are in the 180s except 1 which showed 145. I changed all the plugs, oil and filters. I also drained the old fuel and fuel filter. Radiator was empty and thermostat had disentegrated cavities in the cooling systme had white powered residue. Car will only turn over when i jump the starter leads with a screw driver and get nothing, no power when tunring the ignition key, So what do you all recommend I do next? Will post pics of the car when i bought it. Ive had it about 10 days.

SORRY - I THOUGHT I WAS LOGGED IN AND POSTED THIS AS A GUEST. ADMIN PLEASE DELETE THE GUEST POST AND USE THIS ONE. Need some help on what to do next, here's the story so far. 1976 280z California edition (manf. date Sept.1975). Bought the car in late Jan. 2019, car passed emissions test and it started and drove fine until 2 weeks ago when problem first occurred. Engine runs very rough for about 1-3 minutes at high RPM when gas pedal is pressed, and exhaust kicks out white-ish / light gray fumes. When gas pedal is released, engine dies, car will not idle. Try to start again and engine cranks but will not start. Let it sit for …

Well my car was running great and almost all at once in between times I drove it, the next time I turned the key it seemed to be back to where it was before -- running poorly as if it wasn't firing on all cylinders. If you guys remember I caught my #1 cylinder not firing and just cleaning the contacts on either end of the #1 spark plug wire, cleaning and gapping the plug and the car ran wonderfully again. For a few more drives at least. Then it was right back to running terribly again. But even worse, it was running badly and I verified that all six plugs were firing with my timing light so whatever was affecting it this time wasn't as simple as a dead cylinder. In…

I'll start with being brief. I have owned a 1978 Datsun 810 for 26 years. It has, and still is, realiable, dependable and I still have faith but it has also had little brain warping idiosyncracies that even neither the dealers, car repair places, nor myself could understand -- costly, to say the least. Now it's bothering me because I cannot afford to take the chance of wasting money on someone telling me "It's fixed" then the problem arises again two days later. My future posts will explain some of the problems I've had and what eventually happened. Hopefully, my past problems might give someone an idea of what's going on with their car. Also, I hope to gain by someone gi…

Hi all: 1977 280z. Stock with 90k miles. Bought a year ago not running (I know, stupid). It would start, but die immediately. The long version is detailed in my intro thread if you want to read it. http://www.classiczcars.com/index.php?/topic/53262-New-owner-of-'77-280z-from-Upstate-SC The short version. Replaced fuel filter and lines, fuel pressure regulator, injectors, AFM, coil, plugs, plug wires and coolant temp sensor. Cleaned and verified coolant temp circuit function at ECU. Air gap between reluctor and pickup set to 0.012. Timing set to 10 degrees BTDC. All of this was done in response to various symptoms, such as low fuel pressure, misfire, etc. over the past yea…

L28 engine with triple SK/OER carbs, running beautifully last fall. Transplanted the engine into 1970 240z using the same ignition setup. Have not altered timing or carb adjustment. I did adjust the valves but only a couple were out. When I start the engine I have to floor it to keep it going, if I let rpms get under 4000 it dies with back firing through the carbs, new RX7 fuel pump working fine. Help please. Thanks, Chris

Well I just bought this car. It's a 1970 240z with a P79 head and a F54 block out of a 81-83 280zx non turbo. The complete engine was rebuilt less than 6000 miles ago by a very reputable Datsun engine builder, Eiji Hosomi, out of Datsun Spirit. When I bought it the PCV was capped with a freeze plug and there was a breather hose coming off the valve cover. This was smokey and stinky since I've had it. The previous owner said that it had always smoked a little but recently had smoked more. Doing a lot of reading I figured I would uncork the PCV hoping to reduce the blow by coming out of the crankcase and setup a catch can with a breather filter on top. I did just that this …

Hi everyone, I'm a noob from Indianapolis, In. I just picked up a decent 77 280 z 6cyl, 5 speed. It will start in either, and run ragged, but will not start at all w/o either...where should I start... I did a big search of the site and have a few ideas, but wanted to post the specific symptoms, and say hello to you. I love this car and have wanted one ever since I delivered one from Atlana Ga to longview Tx back in 93. Thanks for your help.

I've been daily driving my z for about a month now and it's starting to have a starting problem. When I drive it for a couple of hours the car starts to lose power and begins to cough up and I pull over to the side of the road and it starts but reads low fuel pressure(13 psi) . So luckily I have a Jerry can in the back of my car and i went to buy some fuel and the car started immediately and so I took the freeway and made it like 5 miles and took my exit and the same Thing happened. And now it's reading low fuel pressure when I go to start. But when I wait a few minutes the car starts up run then dies. Sent from my SM-J320V using Classic Zcar Club mobile

Hey everyone, I have been a long time lurker on many forums and I have decided to post some questions because I am at the point where I believe I need guidance on next steps and want to make the right decision. The car I am working on is a 78 280z California Car. It is not my car, it is my parents car that I bought them as a gift 10 years ago. It has been a long time since I have driven the car so I don’t recall its characteristics but it always had a presence of fuel smell in the exhaust. The car was parked because the fuel smell and rough driving started getting worse. The car then sat for a year and a half and now its time to get it back up and running. All the items a…

so i just picked up a 71 240z. engine is a stock l24 with e31 head. only modification is a flamethrower ignition . car was running rough probably about 60-70% of its capabilities. so previous owner parked it and was sitting for about a year. i replaced the mechanical fuel pump , installed new spark plugs, wires , distributor cap and still runs exactly the same. i had to blow air through the return line in the fuel system to get it running so the fuel filter would actually fill up to keep the engine running. to me it seems like the carburetors aren’t getting enough fuel. i was thinking of either rebuilding them myself or ordering new ones from ztherapy, but i don’t want t…

Hey guys I’m new to this website but I have read a ton of stuff on here and it’s been a great help so that’s why I’ve joined. Anyways my 78 280z has been running fine for a while, I have all new fuel injectors, fuel pump, and afm. My fuel pump relay was bad so I wired up a switch to the wires where the fuel pump relay normally connects to and it’s worked fine. Recently however it has been idling horribly at around 500 rpm, but when I flip the fuel pump switch to off it jumps right back up to 1000rpm and idles fine until it dies from fuel starvation. It will also occasionally die out in addition to not accelerating sometimes. I’ll be driving and suddenly the power will not…
