Since there has always seemed to be a lot of threads with people in need of help with their 280z EFI systems, I have come up with an idea that might get those people in need of help on the right track and give them a little basic knowledge about how the fi's on these cars work! This in return would give us a break on not having to explain everything and how the efi system work so often as they could refer back to the sticky post for those types of questions. Not only this, but they could refer back that post for example and they will know what the parts are called so there wouldn't be anymore of the "black part on the top left", but the actual name and part so we would kn…

If the 280Z fuel injection system is in good shape and is working as originally intended, do people consider it a "good" system? Another way to ask that question is... If everything is working properly, is there any reason to be wanting something different or is the original Bosch system the best choice for a stock 280Z motor? I do see people pulling the FI system off and replacing with carbs, but that seems to only be in cases where the FI isn't working properly. What about when it IS working properly? Do people feel the reason to change to something else? I assume the FI system is expected to: Provide better gas mileage vs carbs. Provide better drivability over seasonal…

My injectors are not firing, so I've done some tests... TL;DR: Has my ECU gone bad? Tested at the ECU harness, and each injector connection reads the proper voltage when grounded. Tested at the individual injector connectors, and read the proper voltage as well. Manually fired the injectors by grounding each corresponding terminal on the ECU connector. Turned ignition to "ON" and heard each injector click. Checked the ground circuits on the ECU harness, and all were fine. Basically, wiring from ECU to injectors tested OK, and wiring from ECU to ground tested OK. I've read that ECU failures are pretty unlikely, but all evidence seems to suggest that it may be at fault. Are…

The FUEL DAMPER on my 1978 280Z is leaking and dripping gasoline. Aside from the obvious safety issues, it creates a pressure loss in the fuel system. The FUEL DAMPER sits directly above the fuel pump. Its purpose is to provide a smooth flow of fuel to the engine, so it is unwise to bypass it. This is Nissan part 22675-N4205 which is NLA and very hard to find. It was used in the 280Z, 280ZX, 810 & 200SX. The early unit has the adjusting bolt while the later unit does not. But both have the same part numbers and function the same. See the pictures. I have called all the usual vendors and have had no luck in finding one. Motorsport says they can’t even get it out of J…

I just recently decided to start working on a 1972 240z that I acquired in a trade several years ago. It has two Weber two barrel carb setup that somebody before installed and did a rather poor job and would take too much time and effort into straightening out the mess (linkage butchered, air injection(?) tubes on manifold cut and crimped off, vacuum lines blocked off, etc) and since I'm not much into carbs, I was thinking of installing a fuel injection unit I found on an '81 280(?) that appears to be able to bolt up with little or no problems. This is the first 240 I've worked on and need info if this type of conversion is possible and what is needed. Also will be sel…

280Z Fuel Lines 1 2

Gentlemen I am replacing the rubber fuel lines on a stock 77 280Z, in an attempt to fix an apparent vapor lock condition. The fuel pump is operating and when cool pumps quite well. I have several questions. These are: 1. Is regular fuel line (not for FI) appropriate for the supply line between the fuel tank and the fuel pump? 2. Is there a simple way to check for proper operation of the fuel damper? If it is not operating properly, how would its failure affect the operation of the vehicle? 3. Is there a simple way to check for the proper operation of the fuel pressure regulator (on the fuel rail)? If is not operating properly, how would its failure affect the operation of…

Hello all. I'm a newbie to the Z world-- just bought a very nice 76 280Z: http://devnulled.com/gallery/280Z-calitocolorado I've worked on / modified DSM's for around 5 years, and can do about anything on them without a problem except rebuild engines, trannies, etc by hand, but decided it was time for something new. Anyhow, on the drive home, I noticed it was running very rich. I had an emissions test done today, and they also confirmed that it was rich. Being that it's fuel injection, I'm not quite sure where to start. I would assume that perhaps the spark is not strong enough? I have some new Taylor wires and NGK plugs to throw on this weekend, so that's a star…

So I have been chasing a EFI issue with my '78 Z and found that the Fuel Pump Control Relay(pictured) is not testing as 'OK' per the FSM. Sad part is that they are NLA - even aftermarket. Furthermore, the part 'Shows up' all over the place(including eBay), but when you order they cancel because Standard Motor Products is no longer making them. When you search any of the numbers in the table below you get a hit, but come up short. So, my comrades, I am appealing to you all to see if you may have a good spare that you would sell or otherwise part with - I would sure appreciate it. I am also considering creating a 'New' solution using a couple of modern relays,…

Hi all, Some time ago a fellow member Lenny was in the process of making an aftermarket ECU which would be a bolt-in replacement for the standard ECU. It was a great idea and I was hoping it would be a success. Unfortunately Lenny was sided tracked and the project stalled. I like the retro EFI in the 280Z, but I would like to have something tunable and it’s getting harder to find good functioning parts for the 280Z. Now for so something I never thought I would do: Fit an aftermarket ECU. Now how to go about it. Which system should I use and should it be a complete swap or partial swap????? The choice soon came down to 3 systems. 1: Th…

After reading a bunch of threads on here, which were helpful in eliminating some of my other questions, ive got a question. I have read the the 78's FI were different than the other years. Where is the FI relay and dropping resistors located at on a 78'? I have the entire dash off and i can trace the ecm harness all the way into the engine bay and they do not ever split off to a relay or anything. I looked right above the ecm where the FI bible says they are and also a 77' FSM (used to own a 77') said they were, but nothing. My problem is my injectors are not firing. I have fuel to the rail, and spark but the engine wont run. If i spray starting fluid in the intake it run…

Hello All, I thought I'd start a new thread to get some feedback on my ZFuel project. To recap, I began a tuneable LJet ECM replacement long long ago in the early 90s, stalled out due to life/growing business, and then rekindled it last year when my son was driving a 77 280. He went away (along with car) to college, so again I stalled on development. I'm glad to say that I have the car back now, and I'm excited about getting this unit off the drawing board and into the garage. I think at the rate that AFM's and ECMs are aging, it's long overdue. Here is a quick overview: Standard Features -100% drop in replacement for stock (should be a 10min install - pull kickplate, ecm…

Many people have reported having the typical 280Z EFI hot-start problem, where after ~10-20 minutes after shut-down (hot engine), the engine starts but runs very rough for what seems like 5 minutes but is actually about 30-40 seconds. Some people with EFI though, report that they don't have the problem (see #43 here - http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/fuel-injection-s30/51601-hellfire-status-release-date-annouced.html#post452357). If we collect enough information, maybe a common solution (or non-cause) will appear. So far, headers and a straight fuel rail seem to be common to one engine that does not have the problem. If you have the hot-start issue, or if you don't, …
