Since there has always seemed to be a lot of threads with people in need of help with their 280z EFI systems, I have come up with an idea that might get those people in need of help on the right track and give them a little basic knowledge about how the fi's on these cars work! This in return would give us a break on not having to explain everything and how the efi system work so often as they could refer back to the sticky post for those types of questions. Not only this, but they could refer back that post for example and they will know what the parts are called so there wouldn't be anymore of the "black part on the top left", but the actual name and part so we would kn…

Hello All, I thought I'd start a new thread to get some feedback on my ZFuel project. To recap, I began a tuneable LJet ECM replacement long long ago in the early 90s, stalled out due to life/growing business, and then rekindled it last year when my son was driving a 77 280. He went away (along with car) to college, so again I stalled on development. I'm glad to say that I have the car back now, and I'm excited about getting this unit off the drawing board and into the garage. I think at the rate that AFM's and ECMs are aging, it's long overdue. Here is a quick overview: Standard Features -100% drop in replacement for stock (should be a 10min install - pull kickplate, ecm…

As some of you might remember, I swapped my original fuel sending unit on my "78 280Z a few weeks ago. Although the original sender measured fuel level adequately, the "FUEL" warning light had stopped working a couple of years ago so I decided to spend some quality quarantine time swapping it for a new reproduction unit from Z Car Depot. I had already tested the yellow/blue lead and assured I had continuity from the "FUEL" light in the dash all the way back to the sender plug. I plugged in the Z Car Depot sender to the harness before inserting it into the tank and upon turning the car key to the "ON" position the "FUEL" illuminated and I could change the position of …

Hi guys, I just purchased an air/fuel mixture gauge (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N3VGPYS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and was wondering where to find the number the car should read when driving/idle. Has anyone done this before? The FSM shows fuel percentages but that isn't readable on these gauges it seems. -chase

ey guys! I have a 1977 280z which used to have the California specific emissions tech. I recently "refreshed" the engine after I got it. I completely redid the fuel tank and fuel system from the tank back going as far as to replace all the hoses for the vapor tank as well. I am just going to list off new things. rebuilt fuel injectos new fuel pressure regulator new fuel damper fuel lines fuel pump rebuilt fuel rail rebuilt head and new headgasket all new seals around the engine spark plugs rotor distributor cap plug wires oil pressure sender water temp sendor water pump/…

Anyone that has read my "I think I'm getting somewhere post" and other EFI post's know that I am chasing a fuel pump shut off issue. My question is; is it normal for the fuel pump to run with the EFI relay unplugged? That's both the white and black connectors unplugged. The fuel pump still runs in the "on" position, engine not running. As you can tell I'm drawing at straws right now because I'm running out of things to test using my FSM. I'm always able to find and fix any problem with my cars but this one is baffling. Appreciate any help at this point. Bob

The Zfuel thread was getting kinda long, so I thought I would start a fresh one along with the new update. The original thread is here: http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/fuel-injection-s30/49964-zfuel.html Well, today the HellFire ECU ran my Z quite nicely using 100% stock components (including cold start valve) & of course the stock AFM. It started and was very rich, which I did expect as I just had guesses in for AFM calibration. I tweaked the numbers and brought the pulsewidth down and the engine smoothed right up and purred around 800-900. I was able to track the CLT and IAT temps come up on the GUI and could tell I was having to lean up the fuel as it warmed up…

Many people have reported having the typical 280Z EFI hot-start problem, where after ~10-20 minutes after shut-down (hot engine), the engine starts but runs very rough for what seems like 5 minutes but is actually about 30-40 seconds. Some people with EFI though, report that they don't have the problem (see #43 here - http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/fuel-injection-s30/51601-hellfire-status-release-date-annouced.html#post452357). If we collect enough information, maybe a common solution (or non-cause) will appear. So far, headers and a straight fuel rail seem to be common to one engine that does not have the problem. If you have the hot-start issue, or if you don't, …

If the 280Z fuel injection system is in good shape and is working as originally intended, do people consider it a "good" system? Another way to ask that question is... If everything is working properly, is there any reason to be wanting something different or is the original Bosch system the best choice for a stock 280Z motor? I do see people pulling the FI system off and replacing with carbs, but that seems to only be in cases where the FI isn't working properly. What about when it IS working properly? Do people feel the reason to change to something else? I assume the FI system is expected to: Provide better gas mileage vs carbs. Provide better drivability over seasonal…

I have posted a few times in the past about this issue and have read some other posts but I have gotten myself a little confused on where to go first. I will do the best I can describing the problem/issue or opportunity. Remember I am not a mechanic but tyring to learn. I drove the car really for the first time in almost a year after dropping my gas tank, getting out rust, coating and reinstalling. The Fuel Filter was also replaced. Here we go........... Drove car about 50 miles, some at 30mph, some at 80 mph, and some in stop and go traffic. Car starts up fine, first try no issues. Idles at about 900-1000 rpms. Car ran ok for the majority of the trip. I feel it was…

I'm starting this thread as a bit of a placeholder, moving this issue out of my old exhaust manifold/status thread since it's likely I'll need help. The background is listed in the exhaust thread, so I'll keep it focused on the EFI here. Bottom line, car hasn't run in a year, head was pulled and tanked, and the car is back together now. The car will crank easily but not fire. Injectors show 12V but no pulse via NOID light. Zed Head has helped give me some places to start - I'll likely only have access to the car over the weekend, so I can't just run out and mess around, as much as I'd like to. I'll add to this thread as time goes on with status and results. If anyo…

Hi Folks, Love the site. Great info! Did a lot of searching so not to waste anyones time...but. No luck yet. My Name's JR. I am actually working on this 1976 280Z for a customer of mine. I own a shop that does mechanical resto work on classic cars here in upstate NY. I do love the Z cars and this guy has been to 3 other shops with no help, so I volunteered..How hard could it be right? On to the problem. He had a no start, no spark condition when I got it. Figured I needed spark first. Found a bad distributor, Great! Got a new one from Z car source. Now I have great spark, Still no fuel pump. Jumpered pump, (Newer replacement) works fine. Downloaded FSM, started trouble…
