I found this Z on CraigsList for $450. It was a true crapcan that had been in a barn for at least 15 years. From what I can tell, it was parked after the owner gave up on the car. Every mechanical system on the poor Z was either worn out, poorly repaired, or robbed for another car. It was full of dead mice and 3/4 of a large shop vac of mouse poop.
Luckily, the rust wasn't too bad, though it did have some here and there. For what we needed, it was perfect. The title had been lost, so the price was right for a racecar.
We spent nights and weekends over two months cleaning and repairing everything in preparation for its first LeMons race in October '09 at Nelson Ledges in NE Ohio.
Once built, we gave it a BRE looking paintjob with red and white Rustoleum applied with foam rollers. It came out way better than we had ever hoped.
No exterior mods other than a pair of AutoPal H4 lights and a pair of hood mounted Hella 500 aux lights for 24 hour endurance racing.
Gutted interior. Installed roll cage, sparco race seat, and a simple instrument panel to house the original gauges. The stock steering wheel was wrapped with a slip-on auto parts store cover and then wrapped with a Nissan Versa leather cover. It makes a really nice, thick wheel.
Nothing more than a Motorolla radio with my teammate's voice in my ears, and a straight six with an open exhaust.
Bone stock engine with 3 screw SUs. MSA three row radiator.
Two coils cut from each spring, Nissan Sentra jounce bumpers, KYB GR2 dampers, old school unknown mfg sway bars, and relocated front LCA pivots to fix bumpsteer and add camber.
Various 14x6 alloys from the 70's with 195/60R14 Falken RT615 tires.
