Default Hands up who's in Perth (or Australia...)

OK, the more time I spend looking at this great website, posting gooffy questions and replies etc, the more Aussie members seem bob up. So far I think there are 4 of us in Perth (26ounce, Mr.Camoflage, Lee240zPerth and myself). Anyone else?

If we know who we are we can all be collectively miserble about:

    a) the lack of decent Zs for sale withing a 2000km radius of Perth
    b) the lack of a spares/workshop for zs
c)the fact that our U.S. cousins can pick and choose from the 60,000+ 240s that were imported to their land compared to the 2-3000 that came to Australia.

But more to the point, we can share our hard won knowledge on z-survival downunder.

If you're an Aussie, stand up and be counted!

Cheer up, move to Melbourne and have access to parts & service!
At least you've located 4 Perth members, Moderator Mike's visiting Melbourne and there has been silence from the local community.
C'on Melbournites [fellow Victorians], lets hear from you and get together to welcome our overseas visitor.

I'm a Melbourne-boy thru and thru but work brought me to Perth years ago. I'm now in the mode of 'miss Melb when in Perth', miss Perth when in Melb'... some people are never satisfied

I'm glad you started this post halz. Being somewhat isolated out here in WA makes it important to share Z info and contacts.

As for being miserable, I completely agree with your list of points. I was lucky to find a two seater so I have now progressed from (a) to (b). Now the grim reality of my rpoject is starting to hit home.

    Default ZED owners in Perth

    Hi all,

I'm from Perth as well; I must say that the probability to find a zed for sale is close to zero (2 seaters). Most change hands before they even reach the public market place!!! (I chased down the owner of my first 240Z [which is my current project car] to ask beg to sell it to me)

I'm lucky enough to have owned two 240Zs and two 260Zs (proper good cars not just parts cars) as well as my current project a '73 240Z fitted with an RB26DETT Skyline GTR engine (Godzilla).

Parts are hard to get and hard on the wallet too, but alot of people forget that the prices for new parts for modern cars aren't any cheaper (eg doors and bonnets etc.)

Perth crew, drop me a PM if you ever need some parts or assistance, I may just know someone that has them!

    Default Perth z owners

    Hi Guys
Good idea getting a circle of z owners to share knowledge of cars for sale, parts specialists etc.
I too strugle to get certain parts, I had to obtain the last ones from Sydney and they took an age to get.
I have been lucky with cars though as I have obtained two series 1 cars in the last 18 months, these were purchased from the same guy who also has a third car in his possesion (which is the earliest of the three) I am trying to get my hands on this one as well but he does'nt want to sell, yet!!
The same guy also had a 260z two seater this was sold to a guy in Perth who has restored the car as for as I know.
The second car I bought is the best one , it does need work but nothing too serious, car is original matching numbers car with an E31 head so worth the effort and money needed to restore it.
I have seen quite a few 240z's for sale and looked at several that were unfortunately over priced for their condition.
Bargains do come up, so keep looking and see if you can beat me to them!

    Default Dianella car?

AH-HA! so that's why there are no 240zs available in Perth: you've got them all!

Did you look at that orange one in Dianella a few weeks back? The guy wanted $12.5k and claimed it was immaculate. It was a genuine 1-owner car but needed some work...

For any WA people out there looking, there is a 240Z in the quokka this week for $7K. I don't think it is stock because it has a close ratio manual box.

Seen it. Its an early model and I think they had closer ratios than later models. Also, that car was sold to the present owner early in 2001 for under $5k (I'm guessing... it was advertised for $5K in March '01). The present seller gets cagey when questioned on how long he's had the car, who he bought it from etc..!

Yes, you are right, that car was purchased earlier on (few months back) for around $5000.

The car used to be in Mandurah and its a early one (has E31 head). The guy that owns it >> buys and sells zed cars and parts (two brothers one called Martin (tune right mobile mechanic), the other Robin (matchless mobile mechanic), but I think that the car for sale was purchased by their father)

It also has rear view mirrors on the fenders (but not factory fitted ones) and it had really bad rust at the bottom of the quarter panels were it meets the bottom sill panel.

I think 150000 240 world wide? 2000-3000 in Australia? seems a lot. 1600 in UK. Europe?
    Japan?

    Nick,
Surf over to http://zhome.com/History/Zproduction.html Production figures are listed. A total of 6437 zed's [240 to 260] where imported into Au. The page gives a great breakdown on yearly figures.
How many are left is another matter?

Nick, I think you have just spotted a mistake in the book? or is it an oversight as no Jap production is given. If so then there figures are"rubbery" to say the least!
It must be remembered that the 240z appeared as the Fairlady Z with a 2L engine there, but the question remains how many zed's [2L to 2.8L] where produced in total?
    Anyone with any answers?
The first 500 where all LHD, 500 was a production figure that Datsun [Nissan] needed for the vehicle to be recognised by whichever sports ruling body at the time as a production whatever car [racing,rally/whatever].
The earliest RHD is #004. I know the owner and it is maintained in showroom condition.

    YO I'm from Melbourne Fellas.
Is this the same Z as pictured below and does Lindsay from the Z Shop know this person. He tells me they have the earliest know of 240z in the world but as Alan tells me this may be incorrect.

Lindsay knows the person and the car. It was garaged there for a while last year.
Unfortunately, I can't download your uploaded pic, so I don't know what it is a photo of?
I was speaking to the owners son last week and he didn't mention that 004 had been sold, then again I didn't ask either. Send photo to 240z@universal.alphalink.com.au so I can see who you're talking about.

Guys, Does the car you are all obliquely refering to happen to belong to a certain TV vet? The NDSOC website displayes a picture of the car, names its owner and stts that its no.4. See attached pic.

At least I know I wasn't imagining it when I couldn't find any info about them for Mike.

Yeah it's the same number plate in the picture as the one I had with Lindsay. I think I looked at this car myself it was so beautiful the pictures just didn't do it justice. In the pictures the paint doesn't look great and the car looks very plain but in person the car is great.

I can't work out how to upload pictures I tried clicking on the IMG button and directing the link to my hard drive is there another way because it asks for an internet address and I can't see a attachment command

Never mind I just worked it out.

There is a place here called Rare Spares who make replacements for old cars.
I imagine a RHD 240z would share the speedo cable of a FairladyZ do u want the whole thing? I have a spare in the garage I think but it's worn and causes the speedo to flicker low down.

TV vets surname is Cooper, previous owner of RHD#004 is Corbett.

We need to find this car once and for all and settle this discussion. I am of the opinion that it was sold a few years back by the Corbett family, but to this date I have been unable to find the new owner

Another little birdy told me that the car was offered to Nissan Japan when the restoration was completed and they wernt interested. Reason being "they wernt into sports cars".

There has been much speculation on this for quite a long period now.

Everone has assumed it has been sold, perhaps it hasn't as there was never any pressure on the owners to sell.

Consider the possibility that it's just been withdrawn from public view by the Corbett's to end any speculation on it's possible future.

My informed bet is that it's still sitting in a garage somewhere in the Dandenongs whatching time go by!

I still believe that the car was sold a few years ago. My source was Trent Corbett. From my communication with him he was either very serious that the car was sold, or deserves a Logie for his acting abilities.

    Trent, where are you!

I often wondered if it would cost more to ship parts from the U.S. than truck them over the central desert of Australia! It must be costly to get parts in Perth. But at least there you all can afford opal inlaid gauges. right?

I heard it went overseas back to Japan a little birdy told me anyone else hear this?
Would that little bird be Lindsay Drife at ZCar workshop in Glen Iris? He (curse him!) is busily buying up Zcars, tarting them up and sending them off to Japan in exchange for cheap skylines which he flogs here.

Well i don't wanna get anyone in trouble but a fellow friend of mine ex-employee there told me at least I'm pretty sure it was him I'd have to ask him again as I was just so excited to meet a Z owner with 1 wicked ride that I dunno if it was him or not.

Lindsy is a bad man sending them overseas making it harder to find them.
However this is where he makes money out of them, they just arnt properly appreciated here in Australia $$$ wise.

I've already PM'ed Daniel its a real problem getting 240Z parts in SA, the going rate seems to be at least an arm a leg, possibly even a left testicle, and your firstborn child. If any fellow South Aussies find a good cheap source of 240 parts let me know .
Hows the car going Daniel, still under the influence of a canary?

    Hi Daniel
Welcome to the wonderful world of Zeds.

I am in the final stages of a total restoration job on my 1970 240
apart from replacing brake components and having the egine/head rebuilt I have had to find few parts, those parts I needed have been or will be supplied by All Z Parts, the only things to come from outside Australia were my replacement seat covers obtained from the US.

Most of the things you need will be available within Australia, even if you do have to pay through the nose, at least with a 260 you should have more luck with second hand spares.

With a bit of luck my car should be finished by in a few weeks, just need to wait for my dash to come back from Dashboard restorations.

If you need any specific info just ask and I will try to put you in touch with people who can help.

    Regards
    Lee

    Hi Daniel and welcome.

Your car looks familiar to me...did you buy it from a guy in Mt. Hawthorn? If its the one I think it is then he had some rust removed and repainted by Stokes and Renk in Subiaco. I have heard from a couple of other sources that they are sympathetic to older cars. We've also had our family car repaired by them and were impressed with the qulity of the job.

Do you live around the Subi area? Looks like you car was photographed in the Centro streets! I'm in Daglish, maybe we could catch up and compare notes.

    Hi Hayden
    yep thats the car allright
I didnt know were he got it repaired but thanks.
No i wouldnt recomend them because the rust is starting to come through on the right hand fender and there is also a few other little spots coming through.
Yer i live in subi centro (leggo land) that would be great to catch up because ive got a lot to learn about zeds.

    Hi Lee
How long did the full restoration take? Because i really want to do a full restoration but im starting uni next year and i dont know if ill have the time. Did you do most of the work yourself?
One more thing how bad was your dash when you sent it in because mine is really bad.

    Hi Daniel

I am sorry to say that I have done little by way of restoring my own car due in part to lack of time and impatience but more because of lack of skill, I figured it would be much quicker and I would end up with a much better car if I let a professional do it.

The guy I know has been restoring classics full time for 15 years and has worked on many cars although his passion is for Rileys, I have been close to the resto throughout and have been impressed at the care he has taken with my car, he is a one man band which has been good, I think I have got a better service and built up a far better relationship than I would have got from a fully commercial restoration workshop type setup, it has also been good in that when finances were tight (buying new house, xmas etc) he has been happy to put the car to one side.

So far the car has been worked on for approx 150-160 hours with about 60-80 hours to go I would think.

The car was completely dismantled and all paint removed, all rust cut out with new metal welded in, car is now painted with engine due to go back in by the end of the week.

Like any resto it has cost a lot of money but the end result should be well worth it, car has been painted in its original colour which is 905 red (have not seen the paint job yet) the engine is original with a E31 head which has also been completely refurbished.

Don't let me put you off doing your car yourself, next time I might even have a go myself.

    Regards
    Lee

    My resto is going slowly.

I'm doing as much of the work as I can. I've had 3 weeks off work over christmas and newyears, but still haven had much od a chance to work on my car. Catching up with friends and family gets in the way.

I'm not going the factory original route. I'm painting my car black (why did nissan wait untill 77 to bring out a blask S30?) and fitting air conditioning.

Currently the car is totaly dismantled and up on stands while I work on the chassis (removing paint, finding rust, removing rust etc etc). Have to repair the sunroof hole in the roof panel.

I have a doner roof ready for the transplant.

I'd like to have it finished (well, drivable) for the next Z day, but i'm not sure if thats a realistic target.

    Hi Daniel

I met the guy who is restoring my car through a mutual friend, he get's all his resto jobs through word of mouth and I have seen some of his work, he is currently working on one of his cars (an early Riley) at weekends, he is currently replacing all of the cars wooden frame which to my eyes would require a fair bit of skill!

My car is being restored to a budget so will not be concours condition, nor did I intend it to be as I would be reluctant to drive it on a regular basis, I just wanted a good usable classic that I could drive as much as possible.

I have taken many photos of the car during the restoration as has the guy who is doing the work which I will load on to this site when the car is finished.

    Daniel

Sorry forgot to answer your question about the dash, it's condition could only be described as grim, it had major cracks all across the top and a previous owner had covered the top with glue in order to stick a dash mat to it, altogether a pretty ugly site, there was no way I could restore the car and leave the dash in that condition.

It has been sent to Dashboard restorations in Queensland, they have completed several resto jobs for our friends in the US, all reports seem to suggest that they do an excellent job.

I was a bit reluctant to send it away as I was a little paranoid about it getting lost but I could not find a W.A based company that could do it.

    Hi guys,

for all the Perth people... there IS a guy in Perth that does dash restorations. I have used his service to do my dash in the 240Z and it is a top finish - even all the gauges fit in with no probs

Daniel, yes your dash that is cracked all the way through CAN be fixed as this was the condition of the dash that I had fixed.

I went through Trim Care in Welshpool since they did the rest of my interior. They can put you onto him.

Its not expensive, from memory its AUD$160 or AUD$250

    Hi Cuong

Could you tell me if you had the entire skin of your dash replaced or did they do a cap job only. Do you know what process they used in the resto job?

If it was a full restoration I'll look to have mine done here, it would save me $300.00 in freight if nothing else

The problem is my dash is at the logistics company and is due to start it's travel to Brisbane tomorrow, think I'll give them a call and get them to take it off the truck pending the possibility of getting it done in Perth.

I would like some more info on this dash restoration. If there is someone in perth doing it it is going to make life a lot easier. Plus the more we can support locals who work on our old cars the better for us.

Does anybody know of anywhere you can get fenders from???

    Happy new year all.

    Default Dash

    Hi All,

Lee - i am not sure if the old skin was taken of or not (havent had a proper look!) but i know the process involves shrinking some new material over the dash after all the cracks have been replaced. By cap, do you mean only the top was done?

My dash was completely recovered, top sides etc. Maybe you can drop around and see it for yourself and then make a decision if this is what you are after. I think there is some money to be saved by going local, another friend of mine had his 260Z dash done by the same guy and it turned out perfect too.

Send me a PM and I will give you my mobile # and we can organise a time for you to see the dash and my car.

Here are the contact info for the trim shop that I used (this is not the dash guy but I went through this shop to get the whole interior done, so the owner of the place will be happy to organise it for you guys)

I think there's 2 ways to repair the dash cracks.

The simple way involves filling the cracks and smothing out the ridges caused by the cracks, then vacuum moulding some new vinyl over the dash.

The harder way involves removing all the old vinyl and repairing or replacing the foam padding, then vacuum moulding some new vinyl over the dash. I think thats how dashboard restorations do it.

I want my Dash done too. Maybe we can all get together and do a bulk order and get some sort of discount.

    Default aussie zzs

    hi guys
just puttin my hand up as one of the melbournian zedders! yeay

my 0.2c on the z rarity? Bloody rare, one might say rarer than a raw steak? lol

I spent over a year lookin at zeds to find a good one. I have been all over the joint, willianstown, lara (where I bought my first z, a dog) donvale, carlton, etc. all over the joint.

In my travels I have seen a heap of dogs, with alot of owners descriptions not matching the actual product. The classic line of most? "just needs a tune up" Needing alot more than a tune up.

I also picked up an original service manual used by the dealer service centers for the 260z in my serach, for nothing. Which is good.

I havent seen a 240 in the flesh yet, not only can I not get out to them quick enough half the time, most are out of the price range, 5-7k+ so yeah.

I was thinkin about joining the ndosc but hasnt happend yet

While I am in the aussie relm if anyone around has a drivers door for a 260 2 seater let us know.

    cam
    finally found z one

    Gday all,

Im from Perth too, as i think many are already aware, however, that was not the purpose of my post. Since no-one appears to want to reply to the 'WA datsun meet' thread, this one seems like a 'next best thing.' So, are WA Zedders and the like still interested in meeting up at some stage during this fine new year? Regardless of whether a car club holds the meet [ozdat for instance] or not, theres no reason why we couldnt organise a sunny sunday afternoon of some sort. Im definitely keen, but am i just calling out to no-one? Interested to hear from you all, regards,

Hey Tom. You'd be welcome to come to the next wazcars meeting. We dont mind the occasional other datsun turning up. Rosie O'grady's South Perth, Sunday January 30th from 3pm. We don't do much except talk about datsuns, and have a beer. Though we should be planning/finalising this years calendar of events.

The ozdat boys are having a bitching session on the ozdat at the moment. kinda goes...wah, wah, spent all this time planning a cruise... wah, wah, wah, ...only 5 cars turned up...wah, wah, cry, dummy spit.

Tom, I turned up to the meeting point to check out the cars that were there, but i couldnt make it on the cruise, i have a z in the garage coming up to 2 years since i started pulling it apart, and weekends are valuable z restoring time.

I had a look at the map they handed out at the cruise. I didnt have a navigator, and it looked like you could get lost pretty easily.

The details were posted on Oz dat, thats where i saw them.

Some of the cars were pretty nice, 2 1600's in particular, but they left early and didn't cruise either. Most of the other cars didnt look all that good. And they were contemplating putting cars in Motorvation, after seeing their cars, I know why so many people said they were deluded.

Hi Doug, By station wagon, you mean 2+2? Sjcurtis collected alot of information, I made a web based database system so that people could put in their details, and everyone could see the results. I'm gonna convert his data and put it in the sysem when he sends it to me

I've just registered the details on the 3 cars that have been in my possession.
Can't help for thinking out aloud, but would it be possible to include RHD zeds that made it to other parts of the world, eg UK and Europe etc?
There RHD status bonds them all together.
Love the way you've set this up, the inital visual stats on the page are impressive.
