View Full Version : My 71 240Z exhaust thread

I currently have a 71 Zed with an MSA 6-2-1 Header that has been jet hot coated. The previous owner decided it needed a 3" pipe all the way back to the no name muffler. I have long known that I have no intention on spending life upwards of 6500 rpm very long and would like a tuned exhaust with a smaller diameter pipe (2.5" all the way back, or even twice pipes)

I have read many many threads on exhausts here, but since this is my first Z, I have noob kind of question. Can I replace my header with a new one without taking off the carbs. From the look of the gasket, its all one piece and would think I would need to replace the entire gasket if I chose to just replace the header?

I have my eye on the Monza header and over/under exhaust system that matches it. Its all aluminized so it should be good to go with rust.

As you can see my old exhaust is rather.. um... oxidized to be nice..

I don't think you have to remove the headers. Isn't there an adapter that will get you down to 2.5"? I think that I've seen one on the MSA site, although it seems to me that one could be fabbed up pretty easily.

But if you can lay your hands on the adapter, then you could just have your exhaust guy replace everything from the collector back.....

Not if you want to change the gasket which would be VERY highly recommended.

1.) Yes, to replace the gasket (whenever either manifold is removed), both intake and exhaust needs to come off.

2.) If the header you have is already coated, why replace it? Any competent exhaust shop will be able to neck down to a smaller diameter pipe. No need to replace the header for that.

My memory may be going, but I don't recall MSA offering a 6-1 header with a 3" outlet. Currently IIRC they all go to a 2.5" outlet and include an adapter to accept a 2.25" exhaust if needed. Of course, it could be a different manufacturer or an older version of their current header (pre 2004) then I would be ignorant of what their offering was....

BTW, once you've been to 6k with a nice exhaust, cam and some other goodies, you'll go back for more pretty often. Like every time you drive it. Trust me, I know....

Well, no argument there, no the revs, but 3" is overkill if you ask me. Plus the current exhaust looks rather bad. I am with Arne on this one. the PO had the foresight to get the header jet hot coated. I would hate to not use it. Seems like a whole bunch of work to replace a perfectly good header. I agree, that a good shop should be able to fab up just the back end of the exhaust. I think that will be my direction.. Plus it will save me 450 bucks on a new header.

When you get her to the track, Stephen, you'll wonder why you ever keep it under 6K on the street!

After two years of body shop hell...... Today I finally got to hear my 240Z L24
with the Monza exhaust + Arizona Z header...... sweet

Much easier on the head than open headers but still has a ballsy tone.....

Not just a Z - zdisease

UPDATE:

my exhaust is now fully planned out. I am purchasing an ANSA tip from WingZr0 this week and will be keeping my stock header. I will have a new aluminized pipe run from the header to the ANSA. I may or may not put a resonator in there, not sure if its needed. But should have that done in a couple of weeks.

My beautiful ANSA tips arrived today. I must say, I am blown away at the look of this part up close. Hard to believe its the age it is.

I want to thank WingZr0 for his prompt service and AMAZING packaging. I would not hesitate to buy anything from him ever again. My polished resonator came in today as well, so I have everything I need to hook up my exhaust this week or next week. Pics and videos to come soon.

Here are the pieces of my exhaust. First the ANSA tip I was so happy to receive, and second the Aero Resonator I picked up from Verocious motorsports. Its 12" long, 2.5" inlet/outlet, and 4" max diameter. Nice polished 304 Stainless steel design. These will be hooked up to my MSA ceramic coated header...

Pics and sounds to come soon.. but for now.

Exhaust is MOUNTED!!! The guys at the shop did 90% of what I wanted. The sound.... OH my Gosh the sound these pipes make. My car exudes power and refinement now. The old craptacular setup is gone and about a dozen rattles I use to have are eliminated.

The car sounds stronger....no more power of course, but the I cannot speak enough of how these make the car sound!!

Which way did you go, Stephen? ANSA plus the resonator or just the ANSA?

ANSA plus resonator.
I was not thrilled at how they necked down from a 2.5" to a 2" pipe to meet the ANSA. Its quite frankly the shoddiest bit of workmanship. Which amazed me. As the rest of the bends and attachments are very very nice. Its like he was forced to hurry up and finish.

She shop owner kept coming by saying to the tech, who was doing a very thorough job up to this point, that he needed to hurry up and finish that car... its taking too long..

I think I will get it redone at a different shop. Its only the last two bends or so to the ANSA, less than 3 feed of pipe. OTHer than that I am VERY happy with how it sounds.

It smooth out really well. Put it to you this way...my wife and I went to a nice dinner last night and we had a conversation in the car at 60 mph with no problem. No droning yet I can detect. I will have to keep an eye on it as the sound will change as the packing material gets burnt in.
