Why are the eight spoked rims so popular with the z cars?

Popular? They're cheap and plentiful since they were a standard ZX rim.

Because they look so damn good!
Others may have some input regarding original Watanabes, Panasports or Mini Lites... but my take is purely from a cosmetic/asthetic point of view.

You know, I completely missed what rim he was referring to. I was talking about the 6 spoke ZX wheel.:stupid:

I think the 6 spoke alloys don't look the part on a Z car, despite having come as optional on them... and ZX wheels just look awful on the earlier car.
I like the 8 spoke minilites, a classic look, third after slot mags, which are second after Daisy hubcaps :)

As you can see, I'm partial to the factory alloys myself.:)

How about the 9 spoke...

Those "8 spokes" are sweet...Panasport Watanabe's right? I'd love to get a set, but i'm just not willing to drop $800+ bucks on rims anytime soon.

Panasport and Watanabe are two different manufacturers. Although Panasports look like Watanabes, there are differences. Two pictures attached - the Watanabe A spoke and the Watanabe B spoke.

Haha, no offense meant from me ever, I just put my opinions out there for the sake of forum discourse... and also to be a forum whipping boy, with the expectation that everyone else then tells me how ridiculous my car looks with polished, unpainted Daisy-style caps ROFL I do like making my opinions known, I'm afraid...

Why would I take offense? I have the correct factory alloys on my Z and 810, not the ZX alloys.

They are a classic rim, and they are not just popular w/ Z-cars, or even Jap cars in general. Plenty of 240SX's, RX-7's, and AE86's are rolling on those rims, as well as a lot of British cars (not Watanbes in particular but that style). I think they look good on almost anything, I'm like the others though, love to have them but can't afford them.

period correct is my reply - RS Watanabe's were listed on the JDM sport option catalogue back in the day and the great news is that you can still get them today :)

I think they have a combination of old school and new school looks to them. I love mine.

Did you got your new suspension installed also? May be just me, but the car in that photo sits better than the initial install pics youposted awhile back.
Lookin good!

No not new. But modified. I cut my stock springs. I will eventually get new. Maybe later this year. I just wanted a quick fix to see what it would look like. Ride didn't seem to change at all.

Hi guys,
Sorry to bring this one back, but I too feel nothing looks better on a Z than an 8-spoke....I just love Watanabe's..
Even though I'm not a 1:1 owner yet, I'm so passionate about them, I am making my own 1/12 versions to go on my 1/12 240ZG model..;)

Thats cool stump, I cant wait to see how your model turns out.
As I would love a set of 8 spoke wanabes for my 240Z. But, untill then I have my old school bean mags. I am also putting some thought into sending off my true wire wheels off for a rechrome.

Personally, I think any race style wheel set looks appropriate on the old Zs, or any sportscar for that matter......makes it look like a sportscar! However, the 8 spoke style really looks period correct to me.

I prefer 6 spoke. These are going on my car when the 5 lug conversion is installed over the next couple of weeks. :classic:

Looks like the rims on my Johnny Lightning model Shelby Cobras ;)
Good look and desing overall.

There's just something special about 8-spoke wheels on a Z. Generally, even numbers of spokes don't look as good as odd numbers on most cars, but the ZX 6-spoke wheels as well as all the various 8-spoke designs look great IMHO. Since you asked... ROFL

I have always thought those would look so good on a Z with the Vella-Rosa body kit (aka) Ferrari 250 GTO.

Minilite is the original - Watanabe the ultimate JDM wheel to have ;) light magnesium rims*
Check out the link:

Note that weight in kilogram an backspace is all there - impressive ;)

I always associated Minilites with British cars and Wats with Japanese cars. I recall the Mini Cooper in the 60s with those tiny 8 spoke Minilites. Weren't those 10" diameter rims? I know they were small.

Minilites were like the name says, first seen on the Cooper minis. http://www.minilitewheels.com/
Being light and strong, the Mustangs and Camaros started using them on road courses, and they became associated with racing and speedy stuff since.

Do you know who John Facenda was? (Rest his soul) If you don't know who he was, he was the narrator for NFL films. I can just hear him saying the second sentence in your previous post.
