I found this article on the web, and figured I would post it on this forum to help out all the guys running su carbs. It helped me out a lot.

Basic and to the point but it leaves out the linkage adjustment entirely. Linkage adjustment is also critical for true balance from idle to top rpm.

True, but that part is fairly basic.

So what's wrong with my SU settings when the back one misfires? Is it timing, mixture, both, or neither?

That artical ignores the very first important step of float bowl level adjustment. Remember the float bowl level is the gross mixture adjustment, followed by the jet level which is the fine adjustment. I've help many who have comto me following guides like the one above and said "It's still lean with the jet already lowered" Reason? - His bowl level was too low.

That's Kyle Hagemann's site. He's been with the club since we started. I haven't seen him in a LONG time though...

He has some other articles as well:

I got this rule of thumb for SU carb float level adjustment....
Use a 1/2 inch drill bit for a gauge... A sloppy fit on the drill should do ok

Backfire issue is definitly float bowl adjustment. The 1/2 drill bit works but make sure there is a hair line crack between the float and bit in making the adjustment. Straight from the mouth of Steve at ZTherapy. It worked for me.
