Now I had no idea this decision would be so difficult! We have nearly completed the restoration of my 1971 240z. The exhaust system is 2.5" diameter and, currently, there is no tailpipe.

I've been looking through photos to try and find a great looking tailpipe. But, I am coming up with no solid answers.

I'd like to go with a thick tailpipe with a rolled end. But, there isn't much on ebay at the moment.

Do you guys have opinions about this ? Anywhere I can look to find cool tailpipe ideas for my size of exhaust ?

-- Mike

PS: I would really like to get a billet-style tip similar to the one on my Harley (attached)

Mike, You might want to look at the chrome tail-pipe that comes with the MSA Super Turbo exhaust system.....made for 2 1/2" pipe, has the rolled edge you are looking for, and is simple and clean looking. Couldn't be more that $30.00!

Try the VW exhaust gurus in Sheridan, Mike, Techtonics Tuning (http://techtonicstuning.com/). For example they have a weld-on stainless 3.5" tip for 2.5" pipe for $35. Part number 254.310. Go to their online catalog, look under Exhaust tips. A lot of their tips are for 2.25", but they've got a few for 2.5" too.

Awesome, thanks for the ideas. I checked out the place in Sheridan, and this tip looks pretty good. I would want to see it in person, though. Do you know if they have a showroom I can go look at these tips?

-- MikeI don't really know for certain, but I think so. They have their own dyno and such, I know. I've bought plenty of stuff from them over the years (2 Sciroccos, one GTI, one Corrado and my wife's 16v Jetta),but never stopped by in person.

But judging from my dealings with them over the years, even if they don't have a showroom, if you showed up at the office I'd bet they'd be happy to show you the tip in person. They seem to be good people.

I'd go with the crome rounded tip like you see on most these cars.:D

I was thinking about puttng two glasspacks together in tandem, with just some plain or polished straight pipes. The muffler shop tells methey can fabricate a V splitter. I really hate it when you see a "sports car" that has dual tailpipes with smoke coming out of only ONE pipe! :devious:

Try one of these http://www.borla.com/products/polished_tips.aspx

I have the single round intercooled on my Alpha1 GTO Rebody.

Would you call that retro-nuovo?

This is what a 250 exhaust is supposed to look like, whichis w:here I got the idea for the glasspacks

This is my show setup. I can swap the rear section with twin glass packs mufflers for street use. This is a true two pipe setup from the headers. This rear section is real NOS from the 70's and has never been fired. Not yet anyway.

Yu change your muffler over at the car show??

It's a rear section with two flanges that end just under and behind the diff. I did a second rear section with mufflers that bolts right in. Takes about 20 min. to change. The picture is of the dual megs.

Ok, these are some good leads! I looked into the MSA tips, but, their 4" is just too damn big. The guys at the shop are giving me a hard time because they don't want to turn this car into a "ricer"...

I am leaning toward the Borla tips but I'd really like to see something on the car. I've attached the ones I'm considering...

While I like the rolled look, the slant cut with the center fins looks pretty sweet.

Mike, what is the diameter of your Harley pipe? I would be surprised if your local (motor)bike shop didn't have something that would work for the Z-might be worth checking into...FWIW.

I'd go with the far right.

I'd go with the first one you've have attached, maybe the third one, but in my opinion the third one is just a little to round, something you'd see on the 350z for example...

What about the tailpipe from a motorcycle? They can get into fairly large diameters and look nice. Could even serve as the entire muffler itself!

This one of for a Ducati:

So, the guys at the shop decided to install an exhaust tip for me today. What do you guys think? :stupid:

I bet somewhere in the breakroom there is a pile of coffee shivering alone in the dark....

Uh, Mike...I hope there is some more matching yellow paint somewhere!

BTW, I don't know if those come in stainless, but I am sure you could have it chrome plated-but just half A$$ paintin' it with silver rustoleum would just look totally narley-I forgot you were getting ready for a show!!!

Got to go with Folgers...Better resonance. There are lots of tips to choose from I always liked the looks of the tips off a 944 Porsche which were oblong in shape. I will see if I can't find a photo to post.

I always liked the looks of the tips off a 944 Porsche which were oblong in shape. I will see if I can't find a photo to post.I know which you mean, Ron. A medium-large black oval tip. I used to run German-made Leistritz SportSound exhausts on several of my VWs mostly because they used that same tip as the 944. Sounded great too. But I'm not sure how a chrome or stainless version of that would look on a Z.

I'm using a pair of these magnaflow 2 1/2" inlet (3 1/2" overall) on my Mopar stroker. They are stainless with rolled ends. They might be too long for your use at 17 3/4". It would keep the fumes away from the car though. :smoke:

to get the most HP out of that fart can, you have to put the type R decal on your Z.

Tube Technologies reproduces Mopar exhaust systems the 71-74 B-body slotted tips are well suited for the application, but very expensive.

I can see Mike now. Down on all fours with a toothbrush trying to get the black out of his intercooled exhaust tip!ROFL
