Does anyone know who makes decent front speakers for the early z's..I'm looking to put an Alpine head unit in that puts out 50watts x 4 and combine that with a 10inch sub enclosure..Any thoughts?

were are you planning to put the speakers? the Sony XPLOD series is awesome for in-door speakers and also if you put 2 6x9's in a MSA like box (i had built my own). the SOny XPLOD also has one of the best amplifiers on the market. they will all work with the Alpine HU.

For big bass, I took out the spare tire and sealed the well with 1" thick MDF wood. It has approximately enough airspace for two 10" woofers or one high wattage 12". I was able to place the origianl carpet back over the custom encolsure so that the car still looked stock in the rear. Of course the new head unit gave it away.
Good luck.

I just put a new Alpine CDM-7874 HU in my '73 a week or two ago. I tried mounting some Infinity Reference 652i's thta I already had in the rear stock locations, but the tweeter stuck out too far to re-mount the stock panels. Not wanting to put holes in them, I went the 6x9 route instead: Kenwood Excelon Dual-Mags. They're made out of some Kevlar-like material, and have huge tweeters. Voices and instruments sounded really natural, and they have nice tight bass response. I put them in some pre-fab 6x9 enclosures. I'm still experimenting with location; once I find a sweet spot I'll bolt them to the hatch floor.
I may still use the Infinity 6.5's, mounted on the front kick panels inside some universal Q-Form kick panel enclosures... gotta decide if the front fill is worth the extra $100 for the Q-forms + putting holes in the stock cardboard panels... maybe I'll just use surface-mount tweeters :)

All great ideas folks..I'm still undecided, but at least now I have direction:) I'll probably go with two 6x9 enclosures and a sub-woofer box, but and this is the last question..Considering the small space in the back of any ealry z..How much is too much..I'm thinking of approx 200 watts each to 2 10inch subs..Is this going to overpower such a tiny area..?

AN option, although I am not certain I like it and there fore have not gone through with it. In addition to mounting the MSA box with a couple of 6X9's and a nice head unit was to either mount them in front of the rear storage bins much like the 280ZX comes stock (although this requires cutting). The rear storage bins cintinue to be functional. I have heard some mounting (and building a custom enclosure) for either 6X9 or 4X6 that installs directly into the rear storage bins, effectivly making them no longer storeage bins. Believe it or not I have even seen a stand-alone pole mounted JVC 6X9 with tweeter fixed to the rear strut or either side. Looks like bug antennae. Then there is always the cutting and installing in the door, removing the dash and installing there, or custom kick panels in the corners or the floorboards. Or heck with it and install it all and have it sounding like a '88 Buick regail that vibrates every time the bass hits. (Yuck)

and the Kenwood Excelon Dual-Mags. And like the duct tape? It's a temporary solution to keeping exhaust gases out of the cabin, and it's working great! LOL

Grantman240z...
I'm a little confused by the picture..Are those two sets of 6x9 or is the set in front of the shock towers a pair of subs..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like they're 2 6x9s, thenat the very back there are two splits...
