The charge light is on in my 280zx and the things that are listed in the title are not working. I replaced the alternator with a known working one I had on hand but that didn't fix it. We've checked the fuse panel and none of those accessories are getting any power to them and we noticed that they are running from the same wire. We looked it up in the wiring diagram and it goes back to a circuit breaker but it doesn't say where the circuit breaker is. If anyone has any ideas where this circuit breaker is and any other possible causes for the issue I would love to hear them. Thanks in advance, Ben. Also, by electrical gauges I mean the secondary 1/4 tank fuel gauge, the ta…

I recently took apart one of the fuel injector connectors that had failed on my Z car, and thought I'd share a little bit about "picking" connectors. "Picking" connectors is rather like lock-picking. You need patience, and strong, sharp little tools. by "picking" i mean reaching in and releasing the spring latch that holds the terminal into the connector shell, so you can withdraw the wire and terminal for repair or replacement. MOST automotive connectors can be "picked". But don't expect it to be easy, especially when the connector shell is full of corrosion and grime. Some connectors you "pick" from the front, others from the rear. The best situation is when you…

Hello! I have a 1978 280z. My tail lights, dash lights, and side markers not coming on, on both sides. Headlights work. 1. I've replaced the stop light fuse with tail light fuse and the stop lights still worked. So that makes me think it's definitely not a fuse. 2. The stop lights still work even after changing fuse so that makes me think it's also not a grounding issue. 3. I've checked the continuity and voltage between the GW and GL plugs under the combination switch and got a signal (see attached photo for location) but no voltage 4. I checked the continuity and voltage at the tail light sockets and tail fuse and got a single but no volt…

Hello, My alternator has an external regulator and I was wondering if i could convert it to an alternator with and internal regulator ? If I can is there a major benefit to the conversion. I have done alot of research with the local auto parts dealers and some of them say that a 1979 280zx 2+2 is suppose to have an internal regulator and some say external. I have owned the car since it was new and i am under the impression that the Factory knows best but I wanted to make sure. also Could someone give me the proper procedure for removing the alternator. My car has been garaged for the last five years and I have misplaced my Chilton's manual. Any Words of Wisdom would be G…

So I believe the ECU on my 1980 280zx went bad, so I ordered a new one off of ebay to test it. But there was a problem: they sent me one for an for a 1981 280zx. I was going to send it back, but before I did that I thought I'd ask; would it work on my car? I did some research online and found that it should, but I didn't get anything definite. Does anyone know if the one year difference in the make of the ECU will affect that car? The plugin looks the same if that makes any difference. The part number I got was A11-618-427. I believe the part number I need A11-604-420

I have a 1980 280zx and it when I put the key in to on position, the fuel pump turns on and floods the engine with gas, causing the engine to lock in place. Any idea of what might be causing that?

Hi there. New to the forum. Got a 1980 280zx a few months ago and I'm trying to sort out some dash issues. The only guage that works is the speedometer. Fuel, tach, temp, oil, voltage, and the clock all do not work. No dash lights either. I've checked my fuses in the passenger footwell and I've cleaned the battery and chassis ground. Any advice on what to try next and/or if these problems are related?

I just purchased an 81 Datsun 280zx that wouldn't start. I combed through lots of forums to figure out a starting/ignition issue. Here are some things I discovered to help narrow down the problem. Maybe this will help others. Car would only crank while in neutral. The park/neutral switch is possibly bad. I moved on to the next item as I could get engine to crank in neutral, but still no start. I then identified that I wasn't getting a spark from the ignition coil. I noticed that the coil positive/negative connections were incorrect which I fixed, but that didn't help. I bypassed the ignition transistor and grounded out the coil on the negative terminal while the…

Hi, this is my first post and I'm not very car saavey, but I'm educated in electronics etc. So, I found an ad for a 1982 280zx in my town and I wanted to know if it was worth buying($1,100). All I know is that it has about it is that it has 107k miles, stock everything. Apparently there is an issue with the starter/key and the power steering pump. here is a link to the ad(no pic): http://santamaria.craigslist.org/cto/2927698962.html I'm going to check it out soon, but i wanted to know if these things would be easy to repair. I have about $1,000 that i can afford to put into it for now. I know it's not that much information, but i want to know what I'm getting myself int…
