I've been having 5-spds rebuild since 2001 at the same shop and I bring them 4-6 a year along with a few diffs for bearing/seal replacement and stub axles to press out. Until recently the price has been under $500. but last month it jumped to nearly double that due to an increase in parts costs and the fact the shop was losing money on the discounted labor rate they had quoted me. The shop told me that the new rebuild kits come with some additional parts that wasn't included earlier (these they had been taking from spare/junk trannies) and they believe the rebuilds are better than before as a result. So my question is, what are other folks paying to have ZX 5-spds (non-t…

I'm building a new L 28 for the green 72. We're using an F 54 block and a P 79 head. We bought Nissan original new .040 over size pistons. We bored the block .040 over and .080 shaved heads (shimmed cam towers). SI stainless swirl valves and an Isky Stage III cam. New rockers , springs and retainers. We'll update as we build onward. I have a question about installing a new engine. THe info I have says to inject oil in to the engine via the pressure sensor port before turning over to prime the system. is there another way to do this? Background - got a 5 speed transmission and engine from a 77 280z. I have a 76 280z. figured since I had an extra engine i could rebuild that and still drive around. new engine has been completely rebuilt, used ARP bolts, block hot-tanked for a few days, bores honed, new bearings, valves ground and fit, the whole 9 yds. replacement parts such as electric cooling fan have finally been obtained and I'm prepping for the actual swap. see pic of engine if curious I did se…

Hey guys, need a bit of help. I have a 74 260z with an auto transmission. The tranny shifts great, but will not slip into 4th gear. It's literally as simple as that. No weird noises, no grinding. As far I can tell, 1-3 feels brand new. So my question is whether or not there is a typical problem and solution to fix this, or if the entire tranny is bad? If it is as simple as replacing a bearing or making an adjustment, I'll drop it myself and replace the part. If not, should I get a new tranny or take it in to a shop? One thing I suspect is that this car was dragged at some point because it has triple weber carbs, straight pipes, oil circulator, and direct tank-engi…

Hey Guys...I am considering installing an R180 diff with 4.11s (non LSD) in my stock '72 (original 2.4 engine with no mods). I will also be installing a 5-speed with a .8 overdrive. The original 3.36 rear is still in it. I ran the numbers and with the .8 rear, and the final drive ratio will be about 3.29. I plan to leave the engine alone and am hoping the 4.11s will wake the Z up a little at stoplights. How streetable is this combination?

I dropped my E31 off at the machine shop. They called me today (I was having them vat my spare head before putting it on), and told me that the head is 4.227" high, 0.008" below the minimum height of 4.235", and that the previous mill job I had done (which took off 0.003") was done badly (their fly cutter picked up a repaired weld and grooved the head around #6). Finally, they told me that the intake seats need replacement as well as the guides (all the seats but #6 are brass). I'm not sure where to go from here. Is the head scrap? Is there a possibility of shimming the head (thicker gasket)? Will I have to shim the cam bearings when I get it back?

I went by a local machine shop last week to ask if they would consider re-working my N47 head off my '77. He had a head that was, as told by the customer off a '80 ZX, not picked up from 2006. He got it down and removed the bag it was wrapped in and to my surprise it was a N42 with a oiler cam and the cam towers did not have the holes for a spray bar. It has the hole up front for a mechanical fuel pump but no plate covering it. So could it be that someone had new cam towers installed and the power steering pump on the '80 car covered the fuel pump opening? All my searching shows the P79 had that same hole but would the head still be stamped N42 or P79? All I see is …

I've been chasing down valvetrain noise for the last month or two on my 240Z (stock block, E31 head), and I think I've found the culprit: #3 intake valve is sticking. I noticed it this way: I was (again) checking valve clearances, because of clacking, and once I had everything set, I cranked the motor over, and it sounded like a box of rocks. I pulled the valve cover again, and saw that #3 intake valve was stuck at about half-mast, the rocker arm quite askew. I was able to free the valve with a quick tap with a soft-faced hammer (it popped right back up). There is definitely some damage to the cam lobe at the edges (it threw a lash pad once before). There is no damage t…

As stated I have a Rebello 3.2 engine with the "big cam" 63de kit(according to the previous owners build sheet). I just wanted to know if anyone knows what the valve clearance specification is for this cam on both the intake and exhaust.

 Well I was all excited about the cooler weather and how well the car was running and then she started running kind of different. I pulled the plugs and #3 was about carbon fouled, but 1&2 weren't bad. So I whipped out the compression guage and all 6 were hovering around 180-looked good. So I'm thinking why would just one cylinder be rich when the other two on the manifold were decent. I had a spare set of bosch wires so I put them on and figured I would get some new plugs eventually. I swapped the #3 plug around to #1 so I could hopefully see if #3 would do that again. I also changed around by O2 sensor to the other bank of cylinders to see if I had them running…

When I took my engine apart last January for a rebuild, the tube on the front of the block that attaches to a hose then to the PCV valve came out of the blockwith little to no resistance. this is a metal pipe about an inch in diameter, on the driver's side near the front of the engine. I'm assuming this is supposed to be a press fit? I'm thinking about making sure it stays with a touch of JB Weld or something similar. Thoughts? Devin
