I took the struts out of the strut housings and found that a couple of them literally had rusty water in them. The walls of the struts on all 4 were rusted. I used a straight stick with a rag on the end to feel the walls of the strut housings and they are very rough. I have read that it is important when installing struts to put oil in the housing, as the oil dissipates the heat from the struts. I think its important to make sure that the oil evenly coats the struts when I put the new struts back in. I am sure I need to remove the rust from the inside of the strut housings. How would it be best to do this? Should I use naval jelly? My idea is to use a drill with a …

In an attempt to replace my steering rack and bushings I came across this problem. I purchased a rack from a guy thinking it was a '73. (box labled '73) Thought it would be fine looks pretty much the same only a little heavier perhaps. Everything bolts up fine, but the bushings (new MSA urethane) Are 1/4 of an inch narrower than the seats for them in the rack. My question is: are the bushings too norrow or could this be a rack from a '74 260. Also found a tiny bit of play between the steering coupler donut and the steering wheel itself. What the heck is that? The splines in the steering wheel itself? Any input greatly appreciated. Was hoping to race around on the mounta…

This is a totally newbie question, but how feasable is it for a person with moderate mechanical skills to replace front and rear shocks/struts? I've done quite a bit of work on our Zs and Fairladies (rebuilt carbs, swapped engines in one of the 1500s, rewiring, drop gas tanks, etc.) but when our mechanic said our Z cars needed suspension work and quoted the price, I thought it just might be something we could tackle. I read the Haynes manual as I've never done anything to the suspension, and it doesn't look too terribly difficult, but after reading a few threads here I'm starting to wonder if I'd be better off leaving this one to the pros.

Four months ago I bought a 1972 240Z. Never owned a 'Z' before and all I can say is: "Where have you been all my life, baby?" It's been modified by previous owners: 5 spd., electronic ignition, both presumably from a 280Z, cross-drilled front rotors, and the object of my question here. The Z corners as if on rails and has somewhat of a rough ride. But I have no idea if the cornering and ride are unusual or typical for a 240Z. The only -- ah, anomaly, -- in it's handling is a tendency to get loose and a little floatly above 70 -- 75MPH, with even mild crosswinds increasing the looseness. If I jack up the front end so that the wheels hang free, I can easily rotate t…

Hi everyone, Got a box of part and there was a pair of spring in them. New and never install. All theses parts were ordered over 10 years ago and the car was stoll before they arrived. I won't be using them so will list them on ebay. Theses are supposed to be Mulholland front spring part#2351010 but not 100% sure. Can someone help on this since I don't want to list something that isn't what it is. Thanks in advance for your help. Joce

Anyone have any tricks to getting the spindle out of the transverse link at the rear strut? I have the lock bolt out after much penetrating oil and a lot of cussin'. The sway bar's disco'd and all the brake lines are off. The upper strut bolts are still in and tight, holding the weight of the assy. The book sez to leave those till last and drop the assy as a whole unit. Will the strut clear the wheel well if I pull the top nuts and drop it down? I could straighten the joint at the transverse link and take any binding off there.

I am picking this rear sway bar set up on Monday. All it needs are the end links which I think I can get from MS. With this kit I will not need to weld any tabs or drill holes in the floor to install it. Can anybody confirm that this was the BRE manufactured kit? Looking forward to the new anti-roll feeling that should come with the install. It doesn't look like the install should be too difficult. Thanks

I bought the whole hyperflex bushing kit for my '72 and put the box in the hatch while my car is being painted. My buddy who just bought a Z brought his into the same mechanic and while changing out his shocks he needed a rear control arm outer bushing so I told the guy he could steal one of mine as he said he ordered a new one and it would take a week. Well the one he ordered is rubber, so I am trying to find one bushing which is 2 pieces and a sleeve. The bushing has 3062 stamped on it, and i'd prefer black. I dont want to buy the whole kit just for one bushing, and I dont want to mix rubber with poly. So if anyone wants to part with one send me a price in a PM.

So I need to know if anyone has developed a trick to removing the steering pinion without causing any damage to it. According to the FSM it says to "Draw steering pinion assembly out" but this pinion is really in there. So if anyone has a method to ease the pain in removing one of these please let me know, I really do not want to damage this. 77 280Z http://s38.photobucket.com/albums/e106/babry27/77%20Datsun%20Restoration/?start=all&mediafilter=images

For comparative purposes, I am interested in obtaining the ride height of early 260Z's. To keep the measurements simple and consistant, please measure the height from the road to the wheel well side of the front and rear fender wheel arch. Please note any suspension modifications and wheel/tire size. Thanks, Fixitman

In looking through the threads pertaining to this topic, apparently the springs with the number .001 go in front and .002 go in back. However, my set has the .001 springs, but the rears? have the number .202. The ones that go on the front are about one and a half inches longer free height. Does this sound correct? Really don't want to install these twice. Thanks, Victor.
